That... wasn't a story. A story is *about* something. That was a haemorrhage of continuity. The "Doomsday Clock" of Doctor Who. You people who criticised the lack of story-arcs in the *last* series, because "well, this is the HBO era of TV"...? Yeah, this is why you were wrong.

Whitaker may justifiably be remembered as the worst Doctor, not because of her performance (she does well with what she's given) but because she's been set up by Chibnall to be EXCITED all the TIME and there's NO LET-UP and it's based on a MEMORY of TENNANT and there's NO OPTION.

Is it...? And yet "your descendants will be a bunch of mutants" was always seen as a perfectly reasonable way to talk about nuclear war. If "Orphan 55" changes anything, it's that telly-SF is finally describing the eco-holocaust in terms that used to be reserved for World War 3.

Yeah, I know. He's superb at making things happen fast (I looked at the clock during this episode and thought "bloody Hell, we're not even halfway through?"), but his speed-efficiency makes him throw too many things into the script. Some slow respites from Ed Hime would be nice.

SUMMARY: that wasn't a clever or carefully-thought-out story. It was a great pop-culture-circa-2020 story. With some lovely one-liner dialogue that makes me think it's as close to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as this series will get. ("I didn't know it was their mating season...")
