Honestly, I hope you never have to experience it. Addiction isn’t about enjoying something forever. Sometimes it’s about repeatedly going back to something you no longer even enjoy because your brain has become dependent on the cycle. It’s something I’ve been trying to break free from for over 14 years.

Some of the things I did still fill me with shame whenever I think about them. Another thing pornography and compulsive masturbation addiction did to me that I’ve never really talked about… During my undergraduate days, I had a girlfriend. Whenever we had sex, she’d sometimes complain that my erection wasn’t strong enough. Deep down, I wondered if years of pornography and compulsive masturbation were to blame. I never had the courage to talk about it. Instead, I carried the shame in silence. Every complaint chipped away at my confidence. I started questioning myself as a man. Even outside the relationship, I wasn’t the same. My confidence dropped, I withdrew from people, and I stopped believing in myself. Eventually, we went our separate ways, not because I didn’t love her, but because I wasn’t okay and didn’t know how to explain what I was going through. Looking back, I don’t think pornography and compulsive masturbation only affected my sex life. I think it slowly convinced me that I wasn’t enough. That’s what addiction does. It doesn’t always destroy you overnight. Sometimes it slowly takes pieces of you until one day you struggle to recognize the person you’ve become.

@ahanonu75 I couldn’t agree more. Admitting I needed help was probably the hardest step for me. For years, I kept convincing myself I could beat it on my own. I was wrong.

I used to think having a girlfriend would make the urges disappear. It didn’t. I have been in relationships, but I still struggled with pornography and compulsive masturbation. That’s when I realized this battle wasn’t about being single. It was much deeper than that. I’m still figuring my way through it, but that’s one lesson I’m convinced of.
