After flying F-14's for the aerial stunts in Top Gun, Scott Altman became an Astronaut, here's him landing the shuttle. I think he planted that nose wheel like he was landing on a carrier.
@DJSnM Actually the shuttle landing is nothing like coming aboard a carrier. (I've flown the STA and done the profile a number of times.) A carrier landing is done at a vertical speed 700 feet per minute until touchdown. The shuttle does a massive flair with almost no VSI at touchdown.
@DJSnM About wheels I've always had a question in my head: The wheels have pneumatic tires. What happens with them in the vacuum of space? Are the landing gear compartment pressurised?
@DJSnM I knew the shuttle had a steep glide angle but I didn't realize it was that steep!
@DJSnM “We’re not gonna make the center turnoff” well yeah. Fabulous landing, and scary that they have no option to go around.
@DJSnM I’m not sure what you’re talking about, it looked about picture perfect to me.
@DJSnM At first glance I thought I read Sam Altman lol 😂
