I don't think I've ever had as much fun laying down digital ink as today, in Session 3 of the Sequential Storytelling Workshop. Here's one of the panels I was demo'ing for the students! It's crazy, because I'd intended to use more of a clean-cut line art style for this one. You know, minimal shadows, little rendering. Just letting the contour outlines do most of the work. But I couldn't help myself. I went all the way and gave this beast an epic, cinematic lighting scheme that I think brings loads of impact to his final presentation. What is nuts about it though, is I got this much done in one sitting. That NEVER happens! I usually take forever to get this far in a piece. And it's because I changed up my approach. Instead of refining and over-thinking everything to the enth degree before jumping into the inking stage... I just went for it, laying ink right over the top of the roughs. This meant I could be more spontaneous in the creative decisions I made, even in the final stages of inking. I could erase (or as I like to call it, 'white out'), the inked boo-boos I made along the way, and rejig things on the fly as I 'painted with ink' and built out the final image. It was so much more fun that way, because I wasn't just running over lines I'd already spent hours perfecting - I was still able to be creative with it, which maintained the novelty factor and kept my energy high throughout. I was in total flow! The other difference was, normally I would work the inks up in passes - first outlining the major contours, then dropping in the shadows, and finely adding the rendering. I worked this way, because I felt it resulted in a more cohesive end product. But, not this time - I did it all at once, outlining, shadowing and rendering as I made my way throughout the character. The beauty of that was, once I was done with an area, there was no going back. It was outlined, shadowed and rendered - nothing to add, nothing to take out. I just moved onto the next section and continued inking within the context of what I'd already done. One area would inform the amount of shadow, and density of rendering in another area - so in the end that congruency was still there within the piece. You'll never guess why I was inspired to try this new approach by the way... It actually wasn't a new approach at all! I recently watched some of my old Youtube tutorials from years ago. I liked a lot of the stuff I did back then, I wanted to remind myself how the heck I managed to pull some of it off - and I realized this was the approach I took! Who knew you could learn so much from a younger, wiser you? And so there you have it! I want to keep practicing this method of working, because it helps me let go, get creative and make more progress than ever before, working in a detailed style. It's going to be a heck of a lot fun to see where this goes.
