Russell Moore told NPR that evangelical pastors he works with are facing pushback when preaching the words and ethics of Jesus. He said, “Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount [and] to have someone come up after to say, ‘Where did you get those liberal talking points?’ … What was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ, the response would be, ‘Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak.’” When Christians are quick to publicly proclaim that the teachings of Jesus are antiquated and weak, we have a crisis on our hands. As my friend @Brcremer always says, “when you worship power, things like mercy, empathy, and compassion sound like weakness.”

Something I love about America? Sure. Go to any town or city, and you’ll see Atheists, Lutherans, Catholics, Jews, Moslems, Sikhs, Baptists, and even the occasional Presbyterian all living on the same street. No imposed religious ghettos or quarters. They not only don’t threaten and kill each other, but they also hang out on July 4th to watch fireworks, pass out candy to each other’s kids on Halloween, cheer for the high school football team and band, and bring food to each other when one is sick. America is hardly alone in this regard, but its idea of personal freedom combined with golden rule ethics has pioneered a way ahead. We’ve had our ghettos - notoriously so - rooted in racism, wealth, & poverty. If the other ghettos can be overcome, I have to believe these can be as well. Let's love one another and our neighbors well today and tomorrow.
