What makes this even more striking is that Penguin Worldwide has no issue with Sonia Ji’s content and is publishing the same material internationally. So, what’s different in India? Was Penguin India under pressure to remove passages mentioning Modi, the RSS, and China’s occupation of Indian territory during Modi’s tenure? Sonia Ji refused to delete them, and Penguin India backed out? Same book. Same content. Published worldwide- but apparently too controversial for India. That is not a slush-pile manuscript. That is the highest-credibility submission in Indian publishing this year. @PenguinIndia still asked for “changes.” She refused. They are not the Indian publisher. Then they issued a statement that they were “keen.” So the rule is: agent plus stature equals a deal; unless the memoir belongs to the wrong family. Quote this if Gaurav Shrinagesh’s own lecture now needs a footnote.

Penguin India: “Make changes.” ❌ Penguin Worldwide: “We’ll publish it as it is.” ✅ Same book. Same author. Same contents. Then why the different attitude? Why is Penguin India so scared of publishing Sonia Gandhi’s book as it is? When a book can be published worldwide without such objections, the obvious question is: Who is Penguin India trying to protect??
