Since this seriously helped a friend the other day: If your network doesn't learn, reduce the dataset to a small batch (eg 32 examples) and try to overfit on it. The loss should be near zero (because the network should be able to memorize it); if not, there's a bug in your code.

@willmcgugan Many dark themes don't have high enough contrast for not-so-young eyes. Light themes otoh, often have black on white. There's probably a balance somewhere. Generally, I prefer dark.

@TheZachMueller I really like my LG Gram for this purpose. It's lightweight, has a decent size screen, decent battery life, has a numeric keypad, plenty of USB ports. Fairly affordable but not cheap. No prob dual booting. Con: can get warm if you don't have it on a solid surface.
