@charlesdowding Please share to save these allotments. We heard yesterday that Bath & NE Somerset Council promised allotments on a new build estate near Keynsham then decided to build more houses on the area!!
Back to work! We've completed the re-build of our compost bins. New backwall and internal partitioning complete with a metal corrugated roof giving us just over one cubic metre per section or about six tonnes of organic matter a year and 900L rainwater #nodig #compost #allotments

@grow_mad Sunflowers. Food for all! Bees first and when birds have had their fill of the seeds our crop will make compost for worms and other insects to feed on. When reduced to organic matter it will feed millions of microbes when spread over our soil which in turn will feed us with veg.
@AllAboutGrowing @YorkshireWater Our Council banned hosepipes some years ago on allotments even a hose attached to a water butt. Hoping to get the latter relaxed and advise tenants to save more water aiding those unable to carry cans and maybe control usage with timers.
Two trials in one. Wanted to try a late sowing on 13th July of beetroot seed in sieved compost from green waste on our plot at Hillside Allotments. Photo taken 8 days after sowing, will transplant in another week with hopefully a late harvest. #nodig #homemadecompost
This @DarlacGardening gravity fed timer may be useful to help water your plot from a water butt. A little adaptation of connectors may be required using standard fittings, plus a tap with an integral Hozelock push-on type connector is suggested to help make connections.

Surplus home saved broad bean seed from 2021 were sowed densely into a 15x10ft #nodig bed last October as a green manure. Plants have cropped 15 trays of beans leaving the ground virtually weed free ready for replanting with an excellent pile of bio mass for #composting.

@Shrop_Allotment We did similar using spent hops as cover. Thinking of trying on overgrown plots which have been strimmed to low level, sow white mustard fairly densely then cover with any cheap MP compost. Mustard grows V quickly should suppress weeds. For bulk seed try tinyurl.com/8vukj6f5

@jackwallington A year before this photo was taken this was a healthy productive plot, the tenant let it go and is convinced the only way to maintain it is with Round-Up. Not only is it below the required cultivation level the site rep who claims to encourage wildlife & Assn choose to ignore.

@GrowLikeGrandad Ah! We've got one of those who hasn't grown anything for at least 5 years and he's a site rep. Thinks he's the only one who can run an allotment site, by the way he has 3 plots free of charge. The Assn choose to ignore and there are over 8k people on the Council waiting list!
