🧑‍🏫 Range Bound Stability Explained 🔍 What is it? The Olympus Protocol, through its Range Bound Stability (RBS) system, plays a vital role in encouraging the market to produce a steady price for OHM. It's like a shock absorber for OHM's value against DAI, dampening the volatility (both up and down) in its price. 📝 How it Works: 1. Market Trends and Treasury Reserves When OHM's value falls below a mean, the system uses treasury reserves to buy back and burn OHM. When OHM's value rises, it sells OHM for its reserve of sDAI. This process is like a balancing act, using the treasury's resources to stabilize OHM's price within an acceptable range. 2. Price Calculation The system calculates OHM's 30 Day Simple Moving Average against its reserve asset, deriving boundaries (upper and lower limits) for the free market to operate. This encourages OHM price to not stray too far from the average but allows room for the average to move up or down. 3. User Interaction Users can always swap OHM with reserves at these set wall prices. This means there is always liquidity of last resort available. Bond Markets The system also creates temporary markets (bond markets via @Bond_Protocol) for buying or selling OHM with reserves. That said, instead of spot prices, it uses Sequential Dutch Auctions to seek the best price a buyer is willing to accept, maximizing capital efficiency and allowing the market to price the premium. 🔧 Why it Matters: ↔️ Stability It's crucial for a currency to have a stable value, and RBS helps OHM achieve this. 😌 Confidence By smoothing out volatility, it builds trust among holders. 🌱 Controlled Growth The system ensures OHM's growth or contraction is in line with market conditions, promoting long-term health. 📖 Definitions: Walls (Upper and Lower Wall) These are price boundaries (Asks and Bids). > The upper wall is the highest price OHM has a standing bid for DAI. > The lower wall is the lowest price OHM has a standing bid for OHM. Cushions (Upper and Lower Cushion) These are buffer zones within the walls. The upper cushion is a price below the upper wall, signaling the start of reserve bond market sales of OHM. The lower cushion is above the lower wall, indicating when to start an inverse bond market of OHM. Bond Markets These are sequential dutch auctions activated when OHM's price enters the cushion levels, allowing for additional stabilization actions before the fixed asks and bids of the walls. Treasury Reserves Assets held by the Olympus system used to buy or sell OHM to maintain its price stability. At the time of writing, this is DAI and sDAI. Liquid Backing (LB) $DAI, $sDAI and $wETH held in the treasury reserves and Protocol Owned Liquidity ⚠️ Caveats: Upper Wall Breach The upper wall is designed to circuit break if it receives enough bid pressure and runs out of budget to mint and sell OHM. In this event, the wall falls and price discovery is entered. The wall and cushion will regenerate when price moves back into range and is observed to stay there for roughly six days (Calculated in ETH Epochs). This allows the market to act freely and only brings fresh capacity online when it is stable to do so. This will happen when either price moves down into range or the SMA moves range to meet price. Lower Wall Breach The lower wall operates in much the same way as the upper wall does but instead has a budget of DAI it is permitted to spend buying back and burning OHM before it falls. If it does fall, price discovery is once again entered and the wall will not regenerate until the price moves back into range and is observed to stay there for the next six days. 🔥 The system has the capacity to buy back and burn all OHM in circulation up to Liquid Backing.
