Geno Auriemma was asked how every single player on his team is so enthusiastic. He gave an answer that every young athlete should hear 👏
Yes! Every athlete AND their parents should hear this. It's an occupational hazard of mine so I say this all the time: Communication is 70% non-verbal and body language is easily decipherable - actions definitely speak louder than words. Energy is contagious and one bad egg spoils the whole bunch. No matter how skilled a player is, if their energy is negative they can destroy the team's morale and tank a game in a flash. On the other hand, an enthusiastic and positive player can resurrect a slump and turn the whole game around. We've all seen it happen, it's what die-hard sports fans live for. I ran into a college basketball coach at an AAU tournament who said he appreciates the savings of time to go and scout multiple players at a tournament but missed going to high schools to check out athletes individually. He said watching a prospect walk through the halls, interact with other students, hold doors open for teachers, etc. taught him as much about what kind of teammate/player this kid will be as watching him or her score like crazy during a game. I hope that prioritizing the emotional intelligence of athletes and how they impact the team will become mainstream while my kids are still young enough to benefit from it. This is an excellent public service announcement from a coach who really knows his stuff.
@CoachLisle Amen. As a coach myself, I couldn’t agree more.
@CoachLisle @NWFNole They don’t care about the game really anymore. It’s all about money. The game is just a means to an end.
@CoachLisle Guess a certain Iowa player wouldn’t be playing @UConnWBB
@CoachLisle Love it coach! Good lesson for all athletes. Better lesson for coaches. I had a tennis player in HS who was a jerk in school. I told him you’ll be the best player nobody ever seen play. Took a year on the bench to get that across. Now he is a really coach in his own right.
@CoachLisle This is the best. Need more coaches to hold their teams accountable like this.
@CoachLisle Every coach would be better and their teams and individuals would benefit from paying attention to body language
@CoachLisle First thing he says about what sport they watch on TV ? Here is the real deal -they don’t watch any games on TV,ever. They see some highlights on social media and that’s it . They don’t go to games at all and most HS gyms are pretty much fanless other than parents.
@CoachLisle Spot the hell on!!!!! Work ethic with young players is gone. Work ethic has been replaced by entitlement.
