I have come across a study on ‘personal carbon budgets’ by Dr Howell of Edinburgh. People reduced their emissions by 32% in the first year alone, without any gov help. This should give us all hope. Personal carbon budgets cd be a big part of a solution. research.ed.ac.uk/en/publication…

@chrisw_ottawa @orosane @EcoWatch You are right that there is no int’l body to enforce deadlines. Without such a body, countries are likely to free ride and renege on their promises. We need a body with enforcement powers. I would be really interested in your reactions to my paper. DM and I can send it to you.

@47whitebuffalo @ECOWARRIORSS I empathise with you, Eva. Climate-wise, things are looking bad. But don’t despair, yet. We need a better global agreement (Paris Agreement is hardly fit for purpose) and we need personal carbon budgets. With these, we will be on the right track. Let’s try to get them this year.

@chrisw_ottawa @orosane @EcoWatch Yes, I agree with you - we need deadlines, but they have to be enforceable. Neither the UNFCC, nor Kyoto protocol nor Paris Agreement are enforceable. That is their big, big weakness. We need to establish an ‘international climate referee’. It can be done. DM me if interested.

@47whitebuffalo @ECOWARRIORSS I oscillate b/tpessimism and optimism. When I look for real progress since Rio in 1992, and see little of it, pessimism has the upper hand. But when I realise that the solution is a climate community + personal carbon budgets, which are both attainable, I am optimistic. And you?

@theresphysics @JulieGreenHeart @StuartBCapstick All emissions are caused by individual citizens, somewhere in the world. Every kg of CO2 can be attributed to that citizen who decided to undertake the relevant emitting activity. That person needs to be held to account. We need new concepts. Sounds complex but is simple.

@theresphysics @JulieGreenHeart @StuartBCapstick Secondly, we DO have control over emissions produced by those ‘emitting activities’ which we initiate. All emissions everywhere in the world are the result of one or other citizen deciding to initiate an emitting activity. We need to conceptualise the problem in different terms.

@KevinClimate Not sure about yr conclusion, Kevin. Power is, of course, concentrated in elites. That’s undeniable. But climate change is an ‘international collective action problem’. As such, it can be solved only by sharing sovereignty. If interested, DM me and I can explain what I mean.

@mommom_dayton @PGDynes You are right …. But only to a certain extent. Of course, billionaires will resist contraints on their behaviour. But they also have to respect the law of the land. I am proposing that we make it compulsory for EVERYONE to have a personal carbon budget, billionaires included.
