신성로마황제 카를 5세에게는 공인된 사생아 딸이 있었다. 어머니는 직조공 집안 출신으로 신분이 낮았지만, 황제는 1529년 마르가레타를 공식 딸로 인정했다. 그녀는 1559년 스페인령 네덜란드 총독으로 부임했다. 유럽에서 가장 부유한 속주였지만 실권은 없었다. 세금도 무역도 종교 정책도 마드리드에서 결정됐다. 그래도 그녀는 스페인이 밀어붙이는 신교 탄압을 최대한 완충하며 속주를 관리했고, 불안한 평화는 어떻게든 이어졌다. 그러나 마드리드는 그 방식을 못마땅해했다. 1566년 귀족들의 청원을 마르가레타가 유화적으로 받아들이자, 펠리페 2세는 이듬해 알바 공작을 군대와 함께 보냈다. 알바는 도착하자마자 '피의 평의회'를 세워 신교도와 저항 세력을 대거 처형했다. 권한을 완전히 빼앗긴 마르가레타는 총독직을 사임했다. 강경 진압은 반란에 불을 붙였다. 80년 전쟁 끝에 북부 7개 주는 독립을 쟁취했다. 오늘날의 네덜란드다. 마르가레타에게 실권을 줬더라면, 반란은 일어나지 않았을까? 그렇게 네덜란드는 계속해서 스페인의 속주로 남았을까?

오스만 해군 역사상 최악의 패배였던 레판토에서, 단 한 사람만이 자기 함대를 온전히 끌고 돌아왔다. 아이러니하게도 그는 이탈리아 칼라브리아의 가톨릭 어부 집안에서 태어난 사람이었다. 본명 조반니 디오니지 갈레니. 열일곱 살에 바르바리 해적에게 붙잡혀 갤리선 밑바닥에서 노를 젓는 노예가 됐다. 그러나 이슬람으로 개종한 뒤 인생이 바뀌었다. 노예에서 선장이 되었고, 트리폴리의 베이를 거쳐 1568년 알제의 베이레르베이, 곧 북아프리카 서부 최고 권력자에 올랐다. 유럽인은 그를 오키알리라 불렀다. 1571년 레판토에서 오스만 함대의 중앙과 우익이 무너질 때, 좌익을 맡은 그는 적 우익을 외해로 끌어낸 뒤 벌어진 틈으로 파고들어 기함 한 척을 나포했다. 전열이 무너지자 그는 전리품을 미련 없이 버리고 자기 전대를 빼냈다. 패전의 바다에서 유일하게 작전다운 작전을 편 노예 출신 배교자의 이름은, 그날 이후 "검"을 뜻하는 킬리치 알리로 바뀌었다.
