Research opportunity with @Autism ! We are recruiting a co-design group for a year-long project, researching autistic people's experiences of travel. Please take a look and share. More info/screening questionnaire: smartsurvey.co.uk/s/autistictrav…
By recognising the signs of autism in children, we not only foster early intervention but also empower parents and carers with the needed support. Together, we will work towards a more inclusive society where every child receives the understanding and support they deserve ❤️
From addressing societal inequalities to advocating for neurodiversity, we're committed to bridging gaps, breaking down barriers, and championing equality for Chinese ethnic children, young people, and their families.
Autism can be a fundamental part of who you are but it doesn't define your worth or capabilities. Getting a late diagnosis of autism can create a mix of feelings and uncertainties about what comes next. Remember, your journey is unique, but you're never alone. 🌿❤️
Why do activities for autistic people have to be framed as 'therapy'?

A survey of more than 500 autistic people found 80% preferred identity-first language vs 6% for person-first language. 74% opposed functioning labels vs 13% who supported them. Among people opposing functioning labels 86% supported stating the individual needs of each person 👇

What people also fail to acknowledge in this discussion about the NHS not coping with autism/ADHD assessment demand is that the NHS is struggling to cope in general. It isn’t just autism/ADHD. People are turning to private healthcare more and more, in many areas of health.
THIS is the misdiagnosis that is happening. Not people being ‘handed’ autism and ADHD diagnoses. But neurodivergent people being given inappropriate mental health diagnoses and inappropriate treatment as a result.

As we raise awareness today & every day, let's strive to foster a culture of empathy & support, where every autistic person feels seen, heard, & understood. We can create a future where diversity is celebrated & everyone has the opportunity to thrive. #WorldAutismAwarenessDay
Autism isn't something you grow out of; it's something to embrace. Let's shatter misconceptions, celebrate neurodiversity, and ensure that every voice is heard and valued. Together, we can make a difference—one step, one conversation, one heart at a time.
It’s important to remember that the current diagnostic criteria for autism describe distressed autistic people, yet it’s perfectly possible to be autistic & thrive.
Autistic individuals may struggle with social cues, like feeling everyone's playing a game with rules they don't know. As a parent-carer, you're crucial in supporting them. Find out ways you can help as a parent-carer on our website 🔗 chineseautism.org.uk/resource/makin…
Neurodiversity and colonialism are linked in various ways, primarily through the historical and ongoing impact of colonialism on diverse populations, including neurodivergent individuals. Here are some ways in which they are connected:
During #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek, let's remember: understanding autism is important. It helps with emotions, sensory issues, and fosters belonging. Celebrating neurodiversity means valuing everyone's unique thinking and ensuring acceptance and support. You're not alone. ❤️
Masking is when someone hides their true thoughts, feelings, or who they really to fit in with what's expected by society or those around them. Remember to give yourself space to be you. While masking may be necessary at times, remember, your authenticity is your superpower! 🌟
Thank you @BAISIS_schools for having Hazel as part of the BSA and supporting international students conference today to talk about her story and lived experience! ❤️
Taking a moment to ground yourself can be a gentle way to navigate overwhelming moments. Remember, you're not alone on this journey. Take it one step at a time, and know that support is always available. ❤️
We're incredibly grateful for the support from Chinese Women in the City (CWIC) and the PwC Foundation. If you'd like to contribute and help with our mission, for every pound donated, they will match the contributions. Your support means everything! 🙏 ow.ly/5puJ50QHsQg

imagine if people who have never spent a single day living with ADHD just… didn’t think they were the best people to comment on it???
We're launching the Neurodivergent Peer Support Toolkit (NEST) this summer! ☀️ This is a suite of free resources co-designed with neurodivergent young people & adults to help mainstream secondary schools establish a peer support group for neurodivergent students🌈
Learning I’m autistic finally allowed me to begin working with the complex trauma caused by…not knowing I’m autistic. Understanding how & what I was masking to survive means I’m finally “meeting myself” for the first time…in my 4th decade. Finally…I can breathe.
I almost feel like life just began when I found out I’m Autistic. I began to learn about me, what’s challenging for me, what my skills are, what helps me to thrive. I had words to describe my experiences. I could try to help others understand and put in place things to help me.
Autism assessments put too much emphasis on external signs and behaviours. There is little consideration of the internal world and direct experiences. The criteria need to be rewritten and diagnostic tools updated with direct input from #ActuallyAutistic people.
Submitted my diss today on the 3rd anniversary of my ADHD diagnosis, sought out when I couldn’t cope at uni anymore 🥹 So grateful to have the opportunity to write about autism under capitalism incl the Autism Industrial Complex, welfare state & “Neurodiversity At Work” ♾️
Before I discovered I’m Autistic, I couldn’t understand my experiences. I assumed everyone experienced similar but somehow managed better. I also assumed it was just me and I needed to change. It was a struggle, with repeated burnouts. It helps to know and make sense of it all.
When we talk about the ADHD medication shortages, please remember it is not just ADHD medication. The ‘if it was any other medication, there would be uproar’ argument isn’t true. We have had major shortages in Diabetes and Epilepsy medications, amongst others, too.
As someone who has ADHD and is also autistic, it feels like I am not a part of either the ADHD community or the Autistic community. Since ADHD is my dominant diagnosis, I don't experience autistic traits like other autistic people. I feel like I don’t fit in the ND community💔
i get really frustrated when i am unwell as an autistic person because my interoception is so bad that i can’t tell whether i’m physically unwell or i’m just burnt out or unhappy or what is actually wrong
There is SO much negativity about disabled people getting the support they need. The media does not take ADHD and autism seriously. Constantly amplifying the perspective that increased diagnosis is bad, that increased support being needed is bad.
I never would have believed you if 6.5 years ago you’d told me whilst sectioned on a CAMHS ward that not only would I be here living life, happy & thriving, but that my book sharing my journey would be a Sunday Times Bestseller. But here I am. Thank you so much. 💖 #GirlUnmasked
Reasons an ADHDer might claim PIP: - extra costs eg therapies, coaching, support tools, medication, prepared foods etc - extra costs due to “ADHD tax” eg forgetting about food in the fridge or losing items - issues with money management averaging an extra £1600 a year (Monzo)
being both autistic and adhd is wanting to explode if someone else is 30 seconds late for something, but always being late yourself x sorry x
Let's start using #WhitewashAutism because I am tired of white autism parents and white autistic people taking up spaces and not giving the mic to marginalized parents of autistic children/adults or autistic people. It needs to end. And happy autism awareness acceptance month.
Celebrities stop talking about things they know nothing about, PLEASE!? Takes like this just reinforce the completely false & devastatingly harmful narrative that ADHD is a correctable moral failing I'm so tired of being portrayed as a lazy fuck up (Alt text in replies)
In response to Joe Wicks saying #ADHD is caused by ultra-processed foods: Joe is a force for so much good but on this he's abjectly wrong. His point that a good diet can help almost everyone is right. But diet good, bad, or ugly won't make you have ADHD or make you not have ADHD.
Why do activities for autistic people have to be framed as 'therapy'?
Are you a parent of an autistic child? Please complete a very brief survey to help us design a study to evaluate if surf therapy improves autistic children’s mental health. Thank you cambridge.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ez…

i honestly don’t care about a few teenagers wrongly self-diagnosing. i care about a severely underfunded system built on ableism, misogyny & white supremacy that is letting down endless people (which ultimately forces them to feel they have to find their own support & answers)
