Extra IL coalfield history-May Day posts: The Coal Mine wars of the 1930’s had workers fighting workers (and National Guard) in service of mine owners. Tovey had very competitive men's soccer from 1916-1940’s. Tovey was where, Andrew Gyenes, became an early victim of the wars.

Coal Mine #8 was the reason for Tovey (1920 pop: 913), and in 1921 the immigrants to this new town had a competitive soccer team in the Central Illinois Professional League. Imagine, a town of <1000, had an opportunity for soccer as a profession in 1920’s Illinois coalfields. 2/2

In the 1930’s, coal mining in Taylorville-area was common, and the men’s soccer team incorporated immigrants from a surprising place: France. Zephir Plouviez, captain of the miners in 1932, was unique enough to be called simply “Frenchy” in game reports. 2/2 #SupportLocalSoccer

Extra IL coalfield history-May Day posts: The Coal Mine wars of the 1930’s had workers fighting workers (and National Guard) in service of mine owners. Tovey had very competitive men's soccer from 1916-1940’s. Tovey was where, Andrew Gyenes, became an early victim of the wars.

Coal Mine #8 was the reason for Tovey (1920 pop: 913), and in 1921 the immigrants to this new town had a competitive soccer team in the Central Illinois Professional League. Imagine, a town of <1000, had an opportunity for soccer as a profession in 1920’s Illinois coalfields. 2/2
