Happy St Erkenwald's Day Erkenwald founded #Chertsey Abbey in 666AD & was abbot for 9yrs before becoming Bishop of London. He not only est the buildings but also the moral tone of this important religious institution which had 50,000 acres of land
#FridayFrocks #SpringFlowers: A primrose yellow silk brocade gown, c.1760s. The pattern features floral springs and baskets. The gown was probably worn with a matching petticoat, which has not survived. @Johnchasephoto
Did you catch @TheRepairShop S13 E2? New textile expert Rebecca Bissonnet is the lovely person we turn to when items from The Olive Matthews Collection need a bit of TLC. You can watch her debute here (at 30 mins in)! bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…
Setting up @ASPHFT this morning as part of our @Aimuseums #NewStoriesNewAudience project to record memories of staff past & present for our archives
#ThrowbackThursday – Pound Pond, Pound Road, #Chertsey c.1910. This former C19 gravel pit originally stretched along E side of Pound Rd from near corner of London St to the corner of Stepgates. Over yrs it gradually dried up until was filled completely in 1945 #TBT #LocalHistory
#FridayFrocks - #SpringFlowers: a satin ball gown c.1898 with later alterations. Hand embroidered irises are stitched in chenille with beadwork, sequins, applied chiffon and velvet. Note the glass paste ‘dewdrops’ on the petals. @Johnchasephoto
Throwback Thursday - Chertsey Weir, 1903 1810 Act of Parliament permitted a weir to be constructed “just above the tail of #Chertsey Abbey Mill”, to retain water during the summer so that the shallows at Laleham would remain navigable #TBT #LocalHistory
#FridayFrocks – #SpringFlowers. A 1790s gown of cotton and silk featuring hand painted or ‘pencilled’ flowers. Known as ‘Chintz’, cottons of this kind were very expensive. The style is designed to show off the costly fabric to its best advantage. @Johnchasephoto
#ThrowbackThursday - Englefield Green, c.1944. It is likely #EnglefieldGreen has been a settlement at least since Saxon times. The name, “Inga’s open space”, shows that the history of the area lies in an agricultural past as a large grassed area used as pastural land by community
#FridayFrocks – #SpringFlowers: a cotton muslin girl’s dress beautifully hand embroidered with flowers in tambour-work c.1780s. The fabric is said to have been worked by a bride for her trousseau in 1776 and afterwards made up into a dress for one of her children. @Johnchasephoto
#ThrowbackThursday - 1st recorded mention of mill in #Thorpe is in 1518. Finally closed in 1919 & was purchased by Mr & Mrs Honnor who turned it into a tea room in late 1930s. Subject to Compulsory Purchased Order it was demolished in 1971 to make way for M3 #localhistory #TBT
#FridayFrocks – A #Biba suit c.1971 – 73. It features in our brand-new social history exhibition #SensationalSeventies which looks at the Runnymede area of Surrey in the 1970s. Opens tomorrow - Easter Saturday. Come along for a wonderful trip down memory lane! @Johnchasephoto
#ThrowbackThursday – In 1978 construction work on St. Peter’s Way, #Chertsey, was in progress. These photos, taken from Addlestone Bridge, show the view towards Clay Corner and Chertsey, and St Peter’s Way to the left. #TBT #LocalHistory
#FridayFrocks #SpringBrides, an elaborately decorated UK wedding gown, 1909. The embellishment suggests both Chinese and Japanese influences @Johnchasephoto
#ThrowbackThursday - #Ottershaw Vicarage, 1913 Until Christ Church consecrated in 1864 residents of Ottershaw attended church in #Chertsey. Vicarage too large for vicar & so smaller one built in Cross Lane in 1935. #TBT #LocalHistory
#FridayFrocks – #SpringBrides: Silk satin wedding dress, c.1845. It resembles Queen Victoria’s wedding gown. Just like Victoria’s dress, this one would have been trimmed with lace and flowers for the big day. @Johnchasephoto
#ThrowbackThursday - The Roman remains at #VirginiaWater come from ancient city of Leptis Magna, East of present-day Tripoli, Libya. They were brought to @britishmuseum c1818 but not thought good enough to go on display. George IV decided to set them up at Virginia Water instead
Happy #InternationalWomensDay2024- here are just some of the historic women associated with our great Borough of Runnymede chertseymuseum.org/women
#FridayFrocks – #SpringBrides. This week a c.1901 figured silk gown. A bride is seen from the back as she walks down the aisle, so designers often add features to the back of a gown. Here three bows are added at waist level. @Johnchasephoto
#ThrowbackThursday - The Crouch Oak, #Addlestone, 1874 One of oldest trees in Borough with rental doc of 1624 mentioning property nr “Crockoke” Addlestone, but Elizabeth I said to have picnicked there. C19 folklore said bark was an aphrodisiac #DontTryAtHome #TBT #LocalHistory

Could a dress sound more delicious than this toffee pleated silk jersey? Madame Grès used pleats in a myriad of styles so that whilst the technique became her signature, there was great variety of style. This mod #1970s features a disco-esque cut out for boogie nights #madamegres
Your @IsthmianLeague champions!!!
Some peachy florals, an early #1960s evening gown with a plain skirt but a complicated pattern of pleats and structure at the bodice. It has spring written all over it, so here’s to the prospect of longer days and light bright moments @ChertseyMuseum #fashionhistory

The late 19thc term ‘frou frou’ could have been created for this dress, a complete melange of lace & chiffon & satin & beaded embroidery layered & stitched into a strawberry cream gown. I see Truly Scrumptious of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fame toot-sweeting in this @ChertseyMuseum

One of the 13th century ‘Tristram Tiles’ depicting Tristram entertaining King David of Cornwall with his harp. The tiles were made at Chertsey Abbey in Surrey, and are now part of the collections @britishmuseum #TilesOnTuesday 📷 My own.
Lovely little sketch plan of #Chertsey I came across today, part of the 1650 parliamentary survey of former Crown lands. The viewpoint appears to be roughly that taken from @THORPEPARK 🤣 (E 317/Surrey/10)
@ChertseyMuseum They were real heroines, the housewives during the war. I was brought up after the war when rationing still existed and I get cross with the grandkids who waste food and don’t clear their plates .
Hoping to turn this into a viable walking tour/trail map in the new year as part of a pilot project on the Chertsey Valor entries with @James_G_Clark #ChertseyAbbey #ValorEcclesiasticus #Tudor
Y4 thoroughly enjoyed another fabulous visit to @ChertseyMuseum for an amazing #viking day #chertseyhistory
@ChertseyMuseum I went there yesterday to lay a basket of flowers with the volunteers and rangers of @RunnymedeNT
A late 13th century Chertsey tile from Winchester Cathedral depicting a bishop. Produced at Chertsey Abbey in Surrey, the tile may have originally been located at the high altar or St. Swithun’s shrine. #TilesOnTuesday 📷 My own.
This dress is so reminiscent of my Grandmother’s wedding dress which I have only seen in photographs and know to be blue. She married in 1942 and this similar style features in an exhibition @ChertseyMuseum on wartime clothing and utility fashion #fashionhistory
The memorial at Chertsey is weeded , cleaned and poppied up ready for the armistice service on Saturday 10.30 with a short service and act of remembrance from approximately 10.50. Road closures in place along London street, Windsor street and Guildford street #lestweforget2023
