Today in Parliament, I called for greater transparency around the euthanasia of healthy animals in shelters. Rescue centres are overwhelmed, and the true scale of the problem remains unknown. In the memory of my late friend and colleague Sir David Amess, and following in the footsteps of the wonderful work done by his daughter @KatieAmess, we must ensure euthanasia is always a last resort and stand up for animals that cannot speak for themselves.

As of midnight on Friday 5th June 2026, 26,744 people had signed. Thank you to every single one of them. Defra has indicated that AMDO a small group of the 25 microchip databases are now exploring ‘commercial solutions’ to their industry-led plans. So the question remains: what happens next? Why this matters so much: Missing and stolen pets are the heart of this campaign. Right now, the UK’s microchip system is fragmented — 25 separate databases, 25 separate logins, limited hours of contact and no single lookup point. Reuniting a lost pet can take days, or simply never happen at all. What we need is simple: • One login linking all 25 databases • 24/7 availability — not just 9–5 on weekdays • Instant contact information — not a wait for an email reply or phone message back • Pets reunited in hours, not days The scale of the problem: Approximately 25,000 dogs have been stolen over the last 11 years — and that only counts those who received a Crime Reference Number. It doesn’t include victims of Theft By Finding. Dr Daniel Allen, @Dr_Dan_1 founder of PetTheftReform.co.uk, who co-wrote the petition with myself, reflected: “In the six months since we launched, around 1,500 dogs and cats have been abducted in the UK, 2 new commercial databases have been created, and countless opportunities to scan, check, and reunite missing pets have been lost.” The UK has half a microchip system. Without strong backup procedures, continuity, or proper regulation, pet owners are being let down. This is exactly why we need a Central Microchip Portal. 🐾 Bo, a family’s beloved therapy dog for their autistic child, went missing at a beach in Cornwall. He was microchipped and fully registered with up-to-date owner details — but the vet who scanned him didn’t have an account with that particular database, so couldn’t access the owner’s contact information directly. The result? Inaccurate information was shared publicly stating Bo wasn’t microchipped or registered. A distressing call was made to the family demanding information. Personal details were passed to a third party. And a family spent hours in agony searching for their dog — not because the chip failed, but because the system failed. Bo made it home safely. But this story shows exactly what happens when 25 databases can’t talk to each other. A vet, warden or rescuer shouldn’t need an account with the right database to reunite a pet with their family. A central portal would have resolved this in minutes. “This wouldn’t have happened if there was the Government’s Central Microchip Portal.” The promised central portal was going to link the 25 microchip databases with a single login available 24/7 for authorised users, insuring quick reunifications. Defra’s response to the petition makes it more urgent to save the single point of access. A genuinely independent, government-mandated central portal — free at the point of need — is the only solution that protects every pet owner equally. Twenty years ago I was reunited with my two stolen dogs, Widget and Gizmo 🐾❤️🐾❤️🐾. After a traumatic 10 days I was reunited with my dogs because I had a famous father, Sir Bruce Forsyth. We were able to get national newspapers and TV attention. After our first live appearance on GMTV, appealing for help, a man called in saying he thought he had bought Wigdet at a livestock market in Southall, DogLost organised an animal warden to check the dog’s microchip number and it was Widget! The next day we did another appeal to find Gizmo and luckily enough a lady phoned up to say she had bought a dog of a man in Hayes Park, who looked like Gizmo. The animal warden went out again and it was Gizmo. If it hadn’t been for my father I don’t believe I would ever had got them back! This was back in May 2006. Twenty years ago, my family and I thought we could help other pet owners with missing/stolen dogs and started the Vets Get Scanning campaign. I thought it was a simple fix 🤦🏼‍♀️ Dog Theft was a new phenomenon, I remember telling people in the pet industry that my dogs were stolen, only for them to laugh saying dogs aren’t stolen - they run off and get lost 😡. Because I had experienced the complete cycle of car window being smashed and the dogs being sold on to unsuspecting new families, I could see there was a possible route to help others who were suffering the devastation that my family and I had just experienced. Microchips were fairly new back then, mainly being used for the pet passport scheme, which is why our boys were chipped. I wondered if the veterinary profession thought that they could help reunite dogs that had been sold on by checking microchip registration at pets first treatment? There were only 2 microchip databases back then! Today we have a fragmented microchip system with 25 independent databases in competition with each other, with incompatible logins and no joined-up access. Authorised users searching for a chip match, find the database and then the problems begin with most databases working 9-5 Monday to Friday, some databases have none GDPR call centres who can only take messages, some databases still relying on phone messaging or emails, the person with your lost dog or cat can wait days or even a week for a response from them. Animals go unidentified. Owners go without answers. With the #PetTheftReform campaign highlighting the microchip problems the Government’s Pet Theft Taskforce recommended a Central microchip Portal, at last a solution to a growing problem. DEFRA picked up the mantle and announced in March 2024 the fix with their Central Microchip Portal the single, publicly accountable system linking all 25 UK-compliant databases with one login for vets, wardens and police, providing instant 24/7 access to all microchip records, saving time and ensuring rapid reunifications. Why was it dropped? Still petitioning, still trying to get microchips reuniting missing pets!
