Context/Details: September 26 and 27, 2017. The Ugandan Parliament witnessed a significant political crisis when lawmakers engaged in violent brawls over a proposed constitutional amendment to remove the presidential age limit set at 75 years. This amendment aimed to allow President Yoweri Museveni, aged 73 at the time and in power since 1986 to seek re-election. The intense altercations among MPs, some using microphone stands as weapons, led to the collapse of at least two female lawmakers. The motion for the amendment, introduced by ruling party MP Raphael Magyezi, passed despite fierce resistance from various sectors, including opposition parties, rights activists, and some members of Museveni's party. Critics accused Museveni of authoritarianism and corruption, and the amendment was seen as a move to prolong his rule. In response to the unrest, Uganda's communications regulator banned live broadcasts of events that could incite violence, a decision criticized as a suppression of media freedom. Protests against the amendment in the capital and other areas were met with heavy security force deployment, tear gas, and arrests. I provide context and detailed explanations under similar posts. Throwback to the chaotic scenes in Ugandan Parliament. It is disheartening to witness such disorder and lack of decorum among our representatives. Lets hope for more constructive debates and peaceful resolutions in the future. #Uganda #Parliament
