On the left, the fantasy new urban quarter of Cambridge according to Gove's spiel. Why is it a fib? Simple: you don't just plant 10 year old trees, they have to grow from a little sampling. Right is truth - Waterbeach last month. No trees. I'm sick of being gaslit. Aren't you?
@CambsOpenMedia Err...yeah you can plant 10 year old trees. I can put you in contact with a few companies that supply them if you like?
@CambsOpenMedia The trouble with planting decent sized trees is that they get stolen. The junction at the bottom of Huntingdon Road is an excellent example — trees ~2m tall were planted. Gone within a week… now just a mess.
@CambsOpenMedia We have this all over Bristol too. Every development has lovely CGI trees. Just not real ones. I wonder if we can find a way to collect all these images in one place? @BristolTreeFora
@CambsOpenMedia @MonicaHone Also you wouldn't have big trees like that close to houses, blocking and brushing against their windows
@CambsOpenMedia I think you can plant mature trees but they cost a fortune, friend had mature plane trees in his garden- huge in size and cost.
@CambsOpenMedia Yes we’re used to the futuristic pixel trees in Bristol too.
@CambsOpenMedia @CambsClimate Gove adviser Create Streets Nicholas Boys Smith Chair of the Office for Place as chair of the Building Better Building Beauty Commission ( the BBBB advisers were Dame Fiona Reynolds & Peter Stoddart) never engaged with tree planting or even the idea new streets might need water.
