JUST IN: A federal judge has just ORDERED Llano County Texas to return "all books" that were removed from their libraries due to their content or viewpoint. Library patrons successfully argued that "content-based restrictions" were likely unconstitutional. The Texas judge is also prohibiting the officials from removing any more books while a lawsuit remains pending. The books that were banned included a book for teens that calls the Ku Klux Klan a terrorist group, Isabel Wilkerson’s “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” and a comedic children’s book with three stories from Dawn McMillan’s “I Need a New Butt!” series. The decision could set wide reaching precedent in light of recent book banning in Florida, supported by Ron DeSantis. What a great victory for books! 💙
@CalltoActivism Doesn't the 1st apply to books?
@CalltoActivism So you mean they can't remove all the books from the schools & replace them with assault weapons?
@CalltoActivism It’s shameful that book banning is even an issue since it violates the 1st amendment. The Governor’s actions puts them in conflict with the US constitution.
@CalltoActivism Free Speech Clause 101. To think that legislators would do it in the first place casts doubt on how much they understand the law and Constitution.
@CalltoActivism They need to go through the courts in all the places where these outrageous book bans are occurring, especially since most of these books aren't part of the actual curriculum and most schools have an opt-out clause for materials they don't want their children exposed to.
@CalltoActivism @nathaliejacoby1 Dems have begun the trek of righting all the wrongs that Rs have invoked on society. It's a long road, but we will walk every inch of it to keep democracy alive and make it apply to everyone.
@CalltoActivism What difference does it make for conservatives the books are on the shelves? They don’t read anyway.
@CalltoActivism @ELBY73410335 Do you know why I read most of these books? Because the English teachers, most of them nuns, at my Catholic girls high school in the late 60s assigned them to us, and that’s because they’re great novels meant to expand the thinking and empathy of those who read them.
