Taboos are psychological shortcuts that keep people from talking about certain topics, making particular arguments, or sharing their opinions. Sure, we rely on them for politeness—but politeness is a much lower value than candor, and than people revealing who they actually are. Living in a world of sincerity and authenticity—and understanding the world as it actually is—requires that we operate with far fewer taboos, not that we give them more power over us. The Coddling of the American Mind was enforced through a series of taboos. The Adulthood of the Human Mind will be defined, in part, by having far fewer taboos about what we can frankly discuss.
@glukianoff Respectfully, so is allowing people to express overt hateful bigotry, a violation of our universal moral TABOOS, without facing social consequences, all because we are so absolutist in protecting free speech culture and resisting cancel culture. I wish you would acknowledge that.
The idea that being “indigenous” automatically grants moral ownership of land collapses the moment you look at actual human history and apply a consistent moral standard to it. Long before Europeans arrived, Native American tribes fought, displaced, absorbed, and sometimes wiped out other tribes. The Iroquois Confederacy expanded by crushing rivals. The Aztec Empire grew through conquest, coercion, and tribute. Entire peoples vanished not because of outsiders, but because stronger neighbors took their land. This was not an exception. It was the rule. Morality cannot selectively ignore facts. If land was already changing hands through violence and domination, then “who was there first” cannot logically create an eternal moral claim. A past act of conquest does not become morally sacred simply because enough time has passed. This is not a uniquely American story. It is the story of Homo sapiens everywhere. Humans migrate, compete, conquer, assimilate, and redraw borders. Always have. Always will. No population on earth holds land because history peacefully granted it moral title. Land is held because, at some point, power determined the outcome. Modern moral legitimacy therefore cannot come from ancestry alone. It comes from present responsibility. From how societies govern today, how rights are protected today, and how power is exercised now. Morality applies to living systems, not frozen historical snapshots chosen for political convenience. “Indigenous” is not a scientific or ethical category. It is a political one. It freezes history at a convenient moment and declares that everything before that moment does not count. Who decides that moment? Whoever benefits from it. If you rewind history far enough, every group was once indigenous. If you stop history early enough, every conqueror can reinvent themselves as a victim. Moral arguments about land that ignore this reality are not about justice. They are about power, timing, and narrative control.
Justin Trudeau’s 2015 claim to NYT Magazine that Canada is the “first post-national state” with “no core identity, no mainstream” was met with applause from #TruAnon. The unsurprising result: a political culture where attachment to country is optional — and accusations of treason come cheap.
Smith responds to Eby 'treason' charge. 'For 10 years under Justin Trudeau’s gov't, our province was relentlessly attacked. I’m not going to demonize a million of my fellow citizens when they’ve got legitimate grievances. We need to give Albertans hope.' theglobeandmail.com/politics/artic…
BREAKING: PM Carney to announce more GST credits today, in a grocery store. Great. But instead of sending more cash (which risks inflating food prices even more), why not cut the GST on food altogether? A GST cut would lower prices at the checkout, immediately, for all Canadians — not just some, not later, not via bureaucracy.
This point really cannot be made enough. The people speaking to US reps on behalf of "All Albertans" have no democratic legitimacy. 0. They've not been appointed by any democratically elected leader. Their referendum hasn't yet met the minimum bar to move forward. No separatist party has so much as won a by-election in this province.
Even those sympathetic to separatism should be appalled by the total lack of democratic legitimacy of this group as they purport to speak for and represent Albertan interests. What gives you the right?
Producer Norman Whitfield upended R&B by fundamentally rethinking the parameters of the singing group. He’s not heralded enough for the impact of Ball Of Confusion, Cloud 9, Runaway Child, Psychedelic Shack, Don’t Let The Joneses Get You Down, & Papa Was A Rolling Stone.
Hey guys. This is going to be the most personal update I’ve ever shared publicly. I live in public view — my work does, anyway. I’ve never been shy about sharing my ideas or passions. But I’ve always worked very hard to keep my family out of view. That’s partly for their safety. But also because, despite appearances, I am an intensely private person. The public part of my job is exhausting and often a little frightening. I’m now facing something far more frightening. And I may need your help. Last fall, my wife became very ill. A series of medical tests ruled out the non-scary explanations. Just before Christmas, we were told it was metastatic cancer. She has since undergone urgent surgeries, including successful removal of the primary tumour. She is young, strong, and otherwise healthy, and her recovery so far has been remarkable. Now we are entering a long, grinding phase of this fight — chemotherapy and we hope other treatments — with the goal of getting ahead of this nightmare. We have cause for optimism. The metastasis is real and terrifying, but limited and small. We didn’t catch this “early,” but we may have caught it early by the standards of such things. We have a real shot, and we are determined to fight as hard as we possibly can. Many of you noticed I went completely to ground. This is why. If you are the praying type, we would appreciate your prayers. For those who may be able to offer medical help and options, please reach out — I’m easy to find. I’m assembling an army for her. This is the most important thing I’ve ever done, and I can’t imagine a better use of my energy or my skills. As we settle into a new rhythm, I’m beginning a gradual return to work. Don’t be surprised if you see more thoughts from me about the health-care system. I’ve been amazed and humbled by some of the care we’ve received. I’ve also been shocked and frightened by other parts of the experience. I’ll have more to say about that later. But now I want to talk about my wife. We met when we were 17. We had math class together. I changed my seat so I could look at her. She was stunning. I can still see her in my mind’s eye exactly as she was then. To me, she is as beautiful today as she was at 17. I did, and still do, feel like I’ve been winded when I just look at her. We weren’t high-school sweethearts. Our journey was longer. We didn’t become an official couple until late in university, after a long period of circling each other — trying to understand what to do with a deep friendship that was evolving into something much scarier and more consequential. We made the jump. Not without false starts. Not without fear. But we made it. And my life has been amazing since. Because of her. She is all I have ever wanted. She isn’t perfect. She isn’t easy. Neither am I. We’ve had good times and bad. But she is the absolute foundation of my world. My entire sense of self is wrapped up in her. I don’t know where I end and she begins. Nearly 20 years after we stood in a park and agreed to be together, I am as hopelessly in love with her as I was then. It is a crippling love — more than I contain. I can barely think about it. It just feels like too much when I try. She and our two children are my everything. And I am going to fight for her and for this family with absolutely everything I have. I will never surrender. I can’t. There is no me without her. So that’s the story. Please be patient with me. Please be kind. Pray for us if you can. And help us if you have the power.
I went to my very first NHL game last night. It was actually my very first Hockey game of any kind. Here are 10 things that surprised me: 1) Perhaps the best behaved fans I've ever seen at any sporting event. People are respectful of sight lines, and don't stand or yell unless there's a reason to. 2) It's an incredibly family friendly atmosphere. So many kids there with their parents and grandparents, everyone having a great time. 3) The sounds are amazing! From the blaring fog horn, to the hypnotic swishing sound of blades cutting ice, to the cracking slaps of the puck hitting the glass, I could have enjoyed that experience with my eyes closed. 4) The action is constant during the game, with almost no pauses. Having no out of bounds makes it an incredibly fun sport to watch with limited interruptions. 5) The period breaks are delightful. Plenty long to go and grab a snack, use the bathroom, or have a conversation with the fans next to you. 6) The referees are part of the entertainment. I loved watching them dive away from players and jump over pucks. I also appreciate that they have absolutely no hustle at all when a fight breaks out. They let the men sort things out with their fists until it gets dangerous. 7) Surprisingly easy to follow, even for someone who doesn't know anything about the sport. Were there some penalties and rules that I didn't understand? Yes. However the mode of 'Puck goes in net, team gets point' makes the game very easy for newbies to follow. 8) The arena is refreshingly cool. I hate being hot at a sports event, so having a nice cool environment was lovely! 9) It's an amazing sport to observe from above, there's not a bad seat in the house. We were pretty far removed from the ice, but it didn't matter at all. With the bright white ice and a black puck, it was super easy to follow the game, I am sure that it's really cool to see up close, but I loved my bird's eye perspective which allowed me to take in everything at once. 10) Momentum can shift insanely fast. At one point, we were celebrating a goal scored by the Mammoth. Literally 5 seconds later the Blues answered with a goal of their own. No lead ever feels safe, and that's great as a fan! As I said, that was my first ever hockey game. However, after that experience, it most definitely will not be my last.
A message for @elonmusk on behalf of the people of Iran
As we close out this year, my heart is full. What started years ago as one simple act of kindness right here in Huntsville, Alabama has continued to grow into a nationwide movement—powered by incredible kids, supportive families, generous donors, dedicated volunteers, and believers who see the value in serving others. This year, hundreds of kids stepped up and took on the 50 Yard Challenge—mowing lawns, raking leaves, shoveling snow, and showing up for the elderly, disabled, single parents, veterans, and families in need. They didn’t just complete lawns… they built character. They learned responsibility, discipline, time management, empathy, leadership, and the true meaning of giving back. Watching these young people grow has been one of the greatest honors of my life. To our supporters, donors & partners, thank you. Your belief in this mission allows us to place equipment in kids’ hands, shirts on their backs, and confidence in their hearts. You are helping raise the next generation of leaders, one lawn at a time. To the parents and guardians—thank you for trusting us with your children and for encouraging service over comfort in a world that often says “me first.” And to the kids—never forget this: what you did matters. Every lawn, every driveway, every act of kindness made a real difference in someone’s life. Carry this mindset with you wherever life takes you. As we head into 2026, we’re more motivated than ever. More kids to reach. More communities to serve. More lives to impact. This is just the beginning. From the bottom of my heart—thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s keep growing, keep serving, and keep proving that kindness still wins. Here’s to an even bigger and brighter 2026. Making a difference , one lawn at a time .
13 September 1942 | The 31st transport of Jews deported from Drancy in German-occupied France arrived at #Auschwitz. The first selection took place in Kosel - some 300 Jews were chosen as laborers for the Schmelt organization. After the selection at Auschwitz, 2 men and 78 women were registered in the camp. The remaining grup, some 620 people, were murdered immediately in gas chambers. One of the murdered was Horst Rosenthal, a German-born French cartoonist of Jewish descent. He is best known for his 1942 French comic book Mickey au Camp de Gurs (Mickey Mouse in the Gurs Internment Camp) which he created while he was a prisoner at the Gurs internment camp in Vichy France during World War II. It was a 13-panel comic strip starring Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, who is arrested on suspicion of being Jewish and sent to Gurs.

If you believe free speech is for you but not your political opponents, you're illiberal. If no contrary evidence could change your beliefs, you're a fundamentalist. If you believe the state should punish those with contrary views, you're a totalitarian. If you believe political opponents should be punished with violence or death, you're a terrorist.
The controversial @seanfeucht sought & was rightly given permission to perform on the Legislature grounds, a traditional public forum, immemorially held in trust for the public to engage in free expression, whether popular or hurtful. He was met by a few dozen peaceful protesters, who also exercised their right to free speech, proving the answer to speech with which one disagrees is more speech, not censorship. Alberta exemplified how mature & confident democracies function.
Controversial Christian concert sees mixed crowd in Edmonton - American singer Sean Feucht played a show to a mixed crowd at the Alberta legislature Friday night – some fans, some protesters. ctvnews.ca/edmonton/artic…
As always, people should pause before saying "but." Free speech at a legislature—a traditional public forum, immemorially held in trust for the public to communicate thoughts or discuss public questions, whether popular or hurtful—is a cornerstone of a mature democracy. This councilor and mayoral hopeful is advocating for an unconstitutional exercise of discretion - censoring speech he finds offensive. It is a form of intolerance in itself. Free speech protects speech we disagree with, not just speech the majority favors. Ironically, it is this principle that has protected and continues to protect drag shows, pride parades, and other forms of expression.
I love this city. I love this city because it is an inclusive, vibrant and diverse place where we show up for one another. Today, Sean Feucht will be playing a concert on the Legislature grounds. This show runs counter to the values of inclusion, justice, and respect that are
