My letter to the editor in response to this article, which was not published: Sir, In Tuesday’s Debate feature, Is it time to get religion out of the classroom?, Paddy Monahan’s argument rests on the claim that “40 per cent of parents of children in religious-run schools would prefer if their school was multi-denominational”, but only 41 per cent of eligible households actually responded to the survey. In reality, the figure describes 40 per cent of respondents, which equates to roughly 16 per cent of all families with primary school-aged children – a far cry from the sweeping mandate he suggests. On that basis, the claim that in a “typical Catholic classroom of 25 children, the parents of 10 would rather they were elsewhere” is a significant misreading of the numbers and is a serious exaggeration. The article further asserts that “the true demand for change is almost certainly far higher”. Once basic issues like self-selection bias are taken into account, it is reasonable to assume that respondents are those with strong views, and that many non‑respondents are parents broadly content with existing arrangements. When you add the fact that 60 per cent of respondents with children in religious-run schools do want to retain that ethos, it is much more plausible that any higher “true demand” lies with the status quo, not with change. There is little value in asking parents what they think if the actual results are then recast to suit the agenda of a vocal minority.
