Thank you so much to everyone who was involved in our joint open meet with @harlowpenguins this Saturday. It was a fun and successful meet, with outstanding raffle prizes, fabulous results and great camaraderie!

Friday’s tour ended here, an unassuming carpark that stands on the former site of the Führerbunker - a cramped, fetid underground complex where Hitler spent his final, desperate weeks in 1945 as the Soviet Red Army encircled Berlin. The site remained unmarked until 2006.
Saturday began with one of the most affecting visits of our trip: Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Between 1936 and 1945, more than 200,000 people were held here, from political opponents of the Nazi regime, to Jews, Sinti and Roma and homosexuals. Around 50,000 were killed.

A solemn stop at the Plötzensee memorial prison, where over 2,800 were executed by the Nazi regime. In a striking example of the banality of evil, families were charged 1.5 marks for every day’s imprisonment, 300 marks for the execution, and 12 pfennigs postage for the invoice.
The Olympiastadion, built 1936 to host the so-called ‘Nazi Olympics’ - and where black American sprinter Jesse Owens roundly humiliated the racist Nazi regime by winning four gold medals!
Mr Wagstaff and Mrs Ellen told stories of remarkable bravery outside the Resistance Museum, from the White Rose to the July Bomb Plot (immortalised in the 2009 ‘Valkyrie’), before Mr Dickens introduced the Magnus Hirschfeld memorial, one of the first advocates for LGBT+ rights.
Saturday ended with a post-dinner tour of the Jewish district, from Otto Weidt’s workshop (who saved many of his Jewish employees from Nazi persecution), to the haunting Jewish Victims of Fascism memorial, outside a former Nazi deportation point for Berlin’s Jews.

Our tour continued with a stop on Karl-Liebknecht Street - named after one of the leaders of the doomed 1919 Sparticist Uprising. Mr Dickens recounted the tragic story of this would-be communist revolution, and its brutal suppression by the fledgling Weimar government.
Neue Wache - 18th century Prussian guardhouse turned haunting national memorial to the Victims of War and Tyranny. Soil from concentration camps and battlefields, as well as the mortal remains of unknown prisoners and soldiers, make this a sombre and thought-provoking stop.
