Kyla carried triplets, took them home, cared for them, and buried one of them after his death. Now she's in court fighting for the surviving boys after the intended parent allegedly abandoned them before returning to claim them. Any expectant parent knows that a NICU stay is just about the scariest outcome. For a parent finding out their child will need intensive and critical care at birth, this would be a 5-alarm fire. But not for the intended parent in Kyla's surrogacy case. Kyla gave birth to triplets, visited them daily in the NICU for two months, then breastfed and raised them for two years as if they were her own children. Kyla is a surrogate mother in Florida, contracted with an agency out of California, to provide three babies for a single father from China. As is so often the case in surrogacy, in spite of contracts, Kyla and the children were not protected. In this clip, she explains how random unknown parties (not named in the contracts) showed up at her house with fake documentation to collect the children 5 months after they were born. Two years later, the intended father has still not collected the children, but they were removed by his attorney to an undisclosed location in Florida. Kyla, the only mother these children have known for 2 years, is fundraising for a legal battle to regain custody.

Surrogacy always invites a consumer mindset: commission a baby, specify the terms, reject the result if it doesn't meet expectations. In this case, a surrogate mother refused to abort after a prenatal diagnosis, and now, years later she was sued. A baby is not a product. A pregnancy is not a commercial service. Surrogacy contracts cannot erase the mother-child bond. A surrogate mother is the only mother her child knows. When a child is separated from its mother at birth, or worse, as in this story, at 2 years old, it is clear that the child is treated as nothing more than a product, its mother no more than a service-provider.

Brittneyrose Torres was a surrogate carrying triplets, 2 boys and 1 girl. The buyers told her to abort the girl. Brittneyrose was to receive at least $25- 30k for carrying one baby and $5,000 extra for carrying two or more in her contract with the parents. The biological parents claimed the contract included a provision which allowed them to tell Brittneyrose to abort, and they withheld payments unless she ended their daughter’s life. The parents had been excited about the triplets in the beginning, then around 12 weeks they changed their minds. Brittneyrose said she offered to adopt the baby girl, but the parents refused. Price tags. Contracts. Payments. Surrogacy reduces human beings to products and commodities, to be discarded at the convenience of the buyer.
