The full repo behind the Butterfly Effect is public and open source. Fork it, train it, teach it to do whatever you can imagine. Build your own experiment, give the fly a new environment, and see what happens. We’ll be collaborating with a few of the most interesting implementations. GitHub: github.com/Butterflydev-c…

Three markers drive the motion in BUTTERFLY: one on the thorax and two on the forewings. Their recorded positions guide the body and wing planes. The particle anatomy is a visual reconstruction. Explore the movement behind the model.

How does a wingbeat change the flight? BUTTERFLY displays body position, flight speed and wing opening as you replay a recording. These readouts are derived from captured coordinates. Pause on a frame. Inspect the numbers.

What happens when you let a butterfly write its own animation? You record the flight. Keep the wingbeats, the turns, the uneven rhythm. Then build something that lets people see what actually happened. That's BUTTERFLY. Five butterflies. Eighteen recorded flight segments. Motion captured at 500 frames per second, reconstructed through 8,556 particles. The recordings supply the movement. Our code makes it visible. Being precise about what that means, because it matters: this is recorded flight. The particle body is our reconstruction. We haven't simulated a butterfly's brain or given it intentions. What you're watching began with a living animal moving through space. Slow it down. Rotate the view. Follow a wingtip. Scrub through a fraction of a second and see how much happened inside it. Where the recording ends, the flight ends. Where data is missing, we leave the gap. The interesting part is already there. The code, the source records, and the reconstruction methods are open for inspection. Every wingbeat leaves a trace. github.com/Butterflydev-c…
