One of the fundamental principles of LCA is that products are not compared directly; rather, the environmental impacts associated with providing an equivalent function are compared.

What is the Functional Unit in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)? The functional unit is one of the cornerstones of LCA. 💡 It defines what function is being assessed and establishes the reference against which all inputs, outputs, and environmental impacts are quantified.

While many discussions focus on "what changed," we believe the more important question is: Why do these changes matter? In our latest Build Neutral Journal Post, we examine some of the most significant developments introduced in ISO 14025:2026.
ISO 14025 has been revised for the first time in nearly 20 years. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) have evolved from a niche sustainability tool into a critical component of product transparency, green procurement, embodied carbon reporting, and ESG decision-making.
These decisions ultimately determine what data are collected, what processes are included or excluded, how results are interpreted, whether comparisons are meaningful, and which decisions the study can credibly support.
