Token incentives are easy to start. Harder to outgrow. Most DePIN networks need incentives early. There is a cold start problem: Infrastructure needs to exist before customers arrive. But why should anyone deploy infrastructure before there is demand? Tokens can help bridge that gap. The danger begins when the bridge becomes the destination. If participants remain primarily because emissions are attractive, growth in supply can look like growth in the network even when underlying demand hasn't caught up. That creates an important transition every DePIN project eventually has to face: From incentive funded participation → demand funded participation. Early on, rewards may answer: “Why should I join?” Later, real economic activity has to answer: “Why should I stay?” That changes how I think about token design. The goal shouldn't necessarily be to eliminate incentives. It should be to make incentives increasingly dependent on useful economic activity. More utilization. More verified contribution. More real demand. More reason for the infrastructure to exist without perpetual subsidy. In that model, the token isn't manufacturing an economy. It's coordinating one that is gradually becoming real. For me, that's one of the most important transitions to watch as DePIN matures. #DePIN

The best sign of a successful DePIN network might be that users stop caring about the token. Sounds strange for a token powered network. But think about what users actually want. Connectivity. Compute. Storage. Mapping data. Energy. Advertising reach. They don't necessarily want a token. The token can be valuable because it coordinates the people and infrastructure required to provide that service. Early in a DePIN network, the token is highly visible: Deploy infrastructure → earn rewards. That helps solve the cold start problem. But as the network matures, the questions should start changing. How much can I earn? becomes Who is actually using this? How many nodes exist? becomes How much service is being consumed? What are the emissions? becomes Where does the revenue come from? Eventually, customers may use the network without knowing or caring what happens underneath. That doesn't necessarily make the token irrelevant. It may mean the infrastructure is finally becoming useful enough to disappear into the background. Nobody thinks about TCP/IP when sending an email. Maybe the better question for DePIN is not: “Will users care about the token?” But: “If users stop caring about the token, does the network still have a reason to exist?” That's when utility gets interesting. #DePIN #Web3

The screens already exist. The audiences already exist. The challenge is making that inventory easy for advertisers to discover and use. That’s what we are building.

#DePIN has a measurement problem. We still celebrate device count too much. A network can add thousands of nodes and still create very little real value. The harder questions are: Is the infrastructure actually available? Is it in useful locations? Can the network verify what it does? Is anyone willing to pay for the service? Do better performing participants earn more than passive ones? That is where I think DePIN will mature. The next phase should be less about: connect hardware --> earn emissions and more about: connect infrastructure --> prove usefulness --> serve real demand --> earn based on contribution That shift matters because token incentives are good at bootstrapping supply. But real demand is what tells us whether the network is economically useful. The strongest DePIN networks may not be the ones with the most devices. They may be the ones with the highest percentage of productive infrastructure.

Being online is only the first step. A useful screen has to stay available, deliver reliably, sit in the right place and serve real demand. That is what should matter for incentives.

I had an interesting experience today. I asked permission in an RWA Telegram community before sharing anything about a DePIN project I’m building. I was removed from the group. The explanation was simple: “strictly RWA.” Fair enough. Every community has the right to define its scope. But it made me think about how we draw the line between RWA and DePIN. The distinction is real. RWA usually brings ownership, claims or economic exposure to real-world assets on-chain. Real estate. Treasuries. Credit. Commodities. Revenue rights. DePIN uses crypto networks to coordinate real-world infrastructure. Wireless networks. Compute. Sensors. Energy infrastructure. Mapping. Screens. The physical asset usually remains independently owned. The network coordinates participation, verification, incentives and settlement around what that infrastructure does. So yes, they are different. But I’m not convinced they live in completely separate worlds. Infrastructure itself is a real-world asset. DePIN networks involve real physical assets, real operators, real locations, real economic activity and increasingly real revenue. The difference is often what the token represents. In RWA, the token may represent a claim on the asset or its economics. In DePIN, the token generally helps coordinate the network around independently owned infrastructure rather than representing ownership of that infrastructure. That feels less like a wall between the two sectors and more like a boundary with an increasingly interesting overlap. As Web3 moves beyond purely digital assets, I suspect we’ll see much more convergence between: real-world assets real-world infrastructure real-world revenue on-chain coordination Maybe the more useful question isn’t: “Is this RWA or DePIN?” Maybe it is: “What part of the real-world economy is being brought into an on-chain economic system, and how?” Curious how others draw the boundary. #DePIN #RWA #Web3 #RealWorldAssets

One thing DePIN should probably measure less is device count. A network can have thousands of connected devices and still have very little economic value. The harder questions are: Are those devices in useful locations? Is anyone actually paying for what they provide? Can the network verify the work? Does better performance lead to better rewards? And if a device stops being useful, should it continue receiving incentives just because it is still online? Incentives are powerful for bootstrapping physical networks. But if incentives become the reason the network exists, rather than a tool to help real demand develop, the model eventually becomes difficult to sustain. I think mature DePIN networks will increasingly care about productive infrastructure, not just connected infrastructure. Device count gets attention. Useful participation creates value.

A lot of the infrastructure already exists. The harder part is connecting independent screens into something advertisers can actually use.
