When I was a kid I thought it was weird that my parents weren't related to one another like we were related to them. "So I'm related to mom and dad and my brother and sister but you guys aren't related to each other?" That was weird. The fact that my parents didn't always know each other was crazy to me. I don't remember when I realized it or when they explained it but I do remember feeling almost a naive childlike sadness for them. I know that sounds so funny, but I felt like that. Like I imagined they wished they were related like us. "That's too bad for mom and dad." The only definition of love we know as kids is the involuntary bond of blood. The being stuck together and forced to treat each other nicely and help each other and do chores and eat your dinner and say your prayers and hug your parents before you go to sleep. There was never a choice. It's just the only thing you know. And you are happy, and have fun, and get in trouble when you don't do what mom and dad ask or treat each other right like the bond that is your whole world expects, and you feel safe because even if you are in trouble you are still loved though you still don't really know what it means. I remember not really understanding how my parents got together. I think at one point I thought it was like a job they signed up for - and I guess it kind of is! - like they went someone and said they would like to be parents and then they (Who? I don't know? But someone!) found them a spouse who would work well with them and that was satisfactory for them. When you are a kid you don't understand voluntary love or how real bonds that weren't there before grow. And in truth, if you are blessed to grow up with good parents and a good home you don't even know what a world without love is. The only love you know is unconditional and just one of the facts of existence like a default setting. Life is love.
