Alberta spot gas is currently priced at CAD $1.75 per GJ. With a generator efficiency of 3.5 kWh per cubic meter and a gas heating value of 38 MJ/m³, each GJ produces approximately 93 kWh of electricity. This results in a fuel cost of roughly CAD $0.019 per kWh.
Bitcoin mining uniquely monetizes natural gas value with far greater efficiency than traditional LNG export projects. While LNG delivered into Asia currently clears around USD $9/GJ (CFR), Bitcoin mining can convert the same gas stream directly into digital value on-site, eliminating liquefaction, shipping, and regasification costs, and capturing energy value that would otherwise be stranded or flared.

Alberta experienced four consecutive days of negative natural gas prices, with rates fluctuating between -$0.85 and -$1 per gigajoule as of September 26, 2025 . Analysts attribute this situation to several overlapping factors: a ramp-up in production associated with LNG Canada (which came online earlier this summer), insufficient gas storage capacity, unseasonably warm fall weather delaying local heating needs, and extended pipeline maintenance reducing local demand. While negative prices have happened before due to Alberta's volatile gas market, the current streak is longer and more extreme than typical years. Energy analysts agree the core issue is a short-term oversupply, not a fundamental or persistent structural problem. They expect the situation to improve as colder weather boosts demand and as LNG export capacity steadies, likely by 2026 when LNG Canada reaches full operations.
