Today would have been my dad’s 98th birthday. That’s him on the right, an RAF pilot at 19, having escaped from Poland in 1940, aged just 13. Bloody foreigners, eh? They come over here. They fly our planes.

The memorial for the Scot Gourley family dated 1693 is rich in symbolism and artistry. Peeping out from the border of the inscription panel are these faces. One is rudely sticking out its tongue, the other looks more serious and forbidding. We are left to speculate on their role.
Re: Eleanor Coppola…When I started producing making-of documentaries, there were a few gold standard film docs I drew inspiration from, mostly due to their refreshing candor, and for being more fearlessly journalistic than promotional. I highly recommend them all.

The gravestone of “Old William Sibbald” on which the inscription tells us “For Temperance There Were Few Such, No One Could Say He Drank Too Much”. Paradoxically this stone is now in the grounds of an Alcohol Detox Centre.
David Knox may have purchased this burial plot and gravestone secondhand, then had the first tenant’s inscription removed and replaced by a statement of his ownership. But David never had his own death and burial recorded here. Why not ?

Two nights ago, I was having dinner in a small restaurant in a small town when an absolute titan among titans walked in. I was fortunate enough to thank him for his magnificent work and inspirational career. And so today, I wish Francis Ford Coppola, a very, very Happy Birthday!
