11 YEARS AGO TODAY, ‘MINIONS’ MADE HISTORY AS THE FIRST NON-DISNEY ANIMATED FILM TO CROSS $1 BILLION! On August 27, 2015, Minions officially crossed the incredible $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, becoming the first animated film outside Disney/Pixar to achieve the milestone. At the time, only two animated movies had previously entered the billion-dollar club: Toy Story 3 and Frozen. That made Minions only the third animated film in history to reach $1 billion worldwide. Produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures, the Despicable Me spin-off put Kevin, Stuart and Bobat the center of their own adventure. The movie ultimately earned approximately $1.159 billion worldwide, establishing the Minions as a massive theatrical franchise in their own right.
