The monument will protect places that are central to the story of #EmmettTill’s life, his brutal death from white supremacists torturing and murdering him at age 14, and his mother, #MamieTillMobley’s activism, which helped spark the civil rights movement. nbcnews.com/politics/white…
@BerniceKing @axidentaliberal Bravo! We need this, clearly!
@BerniceKing So your trading a statue for actual help?
@BerniceKing We get another monument while the same thing that allowed his complicit accomplices to go free still exists today. We don't need any more symbolism. We need tangible reparative justice and the return of our human right to self-determination. Cut the check and leave us alone.
@BerniceKing A thought: absolutely. This should certainly be done. But, think about this: all that this young man was doing was being a teenage boy standing on the sidewalk. Ghastly that this racist, horrific act was done to young Emmett Till. What kind of society created this&let it happen?
@BerniceKing @unixdoss Cue the outrage from the right. They know it’s shameful so they won’t want it to be recognized.
@BerniceKing It would be even better if the monument is guarded. I fear that otherwise it will merely present another target for haters’ vandalism.
@BerniceKing White supremacy is not the problem to black civilization, black have failed to realize their genetic strength.. we don't think about another black.. we lack brother and sisterhood love. If that doesn't change we'll continue talk about white supremacy till end of life.
@BerniceKing I first learned of Emmett Till and his courageous mother watching the PBS documentary Eyes on the Prize during a college course. It was sickening and horrifying but I never once thought ‘no one should know this’. It’s part of American history and shouldn’t ever be repeated.
@BerniceKing Until he addresses the damage and harm hes caused by his crime bill, welfare reform, and mass incarceration actions like this are performative
