🇿🇲 In some good news this week, we'd like to highlight how #Zambia's multi-agency approach to fighting corruption and recovering stolen assets is paying off. In the last month, the @NPAZambia, prosecuting cases investigated by @DECZambia, has recorded unprecedented recoveries of cash amounting to over ZMW 770 million (around USD 30 million). This literally makes asset recovery one of the premium contributors to the national treasury. The amount included the forfeiture of USD 5 million in a settlement related to a gold scam case, plus approximately USD 2 million from foreign nationals implicated in a complex money laundering case. Congratulations to all the investigators, prosecutors and judges involved. Our International Centre for Asset Recovery has recently bolstered its support to Zambia under a 🇬🇧 @FCDOGovUK-funded programme and we look forward to helping the authorities jointly achieve further record-breaking recoveries over the coming years. 👏 More in the NPA's press release: facebook.com/permalink.php?… @nkwoolley
@BaselInstitute @NPAZambia @DECZambia That looks like good news on asset recovery. However, is this statement about "political motivations" from Freedom House 2024 report wrong? Genuine question. I know nothing about Zambia. FH offers top-line and subjective findings of course. freedomhouse.org/country/zambia…
