@AdamCSchembri @aud2526 When I was interpreting in a local hospital this week , we were sat in the waiting room next to a mum & child with CIs. They were watching us sign and said they started to learn but had to stop as they were told it would affect his speech.

Audi claimed it would damage my speech. Mum argued back With Citations. Mum reckons my speech/English-language incidentally improved after I learned BSL.

@MsLoloJ @NicolaFA @AdamCSchembri @aud2526 @BDA_Deaf I actually suspect learning BSL coincided with identification of my deafness language issues and my work to improve those. BSL does give another channel for info tho, and there are times I parse BSL better than English for things. My partner sometimes mixes BSL, speech, drawing.
@MsLoloJ @NicolaFA @AdamCSchembri @aud2526 @BDA_Deaf My Mancunian audiologist freaked out when my Mum (a ToD trainee at the time) proudly told her I'd passed BSL L2. Audi claimed it would damage my speech. Mum argued back With Citations. Mum reckons my speech/English-language incidentally improved after I learned BSL.
@MsLoloJ @NicolaFA @AdamCSchembri @aud2526 @BDA_Deaf It also flies in the face of evidence we've had in Britain for 20+ years and overseas for longer. We need to start suing hearing "deafness professionals" who give un-evidenced based advice like this. I suspect it's the only thing they'll understand.

@NicolaFA @AdamCSchembri @aud2526 This is so desperately sad. There’s no reason #deaf children can’t learn #BSL IN ADDITION to having a CI or hearing aid & being supported to learn English. The main obstacles are the cost of learning BSL (the Govt should fund free courses) and the ignorance of many professionals.
@AdamCSchembri @aud2526 When I was interpreting in a local hospital this week , we were sat in the waiting room next to a mum & child with CIs. They were watching us sign and said they started to learn but had to stop as they were told it would affect his speech.

Every linguistics (audiology, speech therapy, psychology etc) program everywhere on the planet needs to teach this. Only deaf children may have their right to a fully accessible language denied. Surely this is a social justice issue all linguists can acknowledge is important?
