The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), organized an event to commemorate World Environment Day on 5 June at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, World Environment Day has grown into one of the world's largest platforms for environmental awareness and action. This year's observance highlighted the urgent need for climate action. Moderated by Mr. Jamil Ahmad, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at UNEP, the panel featured remarks by Amb. Tofig F. Musayev, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations; Ms. Ligia Noronha, Assistant Secretary-General for Environmental Policy Coordination and Head of the UNEP New York Office; and Ms. Ayisha Siddiqa, Youth Representative. As the global host of World Environment Day 2026, Azerbaijan underscored the urgency of addressing climate change and the importance of translating commitments into tangible actions that strengthen resilience, advance sustainable development, and accelerate the transition to a greener and more sustainable future. The panel discussion was followed by an engaging interactive dialogue with the participation of representatives of Member States, international organizations, and civil society.

A reception marking the Independence Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 28 May 2026. The event was attended by H.E. Mr. Courtenay Rattray, Chef de Cabinet to the United Nations Secretary-General, who delivered remarks on the occasion. He extended his heartfelt congratulations to the people of Azerbaijan and emphasized that “Azerbaijan’s identity has been shaped at the crossroads of continents and civilizations — where ideas, cultures and traditions have flowed and intertwined over centuries.” Permanent Representatives, diplomats, and other senior UN officials also joined the celebration. Guests enjoyed Azerbaijani national cuisine and a musical performance. Addressing the guests, the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan, Amb. Tofig Musayev, highlighted the enduring legacy of the ADR and underscored Azerbaijan’s active contributions across the key pillars of the United Nations — from advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting human rights to supporting international peace and security.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of #Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov addressed the UN Security Council Open Debate under the Presidency of China on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System.”   Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in his speech reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s strong commitment to international law, multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in addressing today’s global challenges.   Minister Bayramov stressed that amid growing geopolitical polarization, increasing unilateralism and continued violations of international law, it is essential to ensure universal and non-selective adherence to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs of states.   The speech highlighted the importance of strengthening accountability for internationally wrongful acts, advancing justice and supporting countries overcoming the devastating consequences of conflict including ensuring the safe, voluntary and dignified return of displaced populations.   Minister also underlined the urgent need for a more effective, inclusive and responsive UN system, including progress on Security Council reform to better reflect the interests and representation of developing countries.   Azerbaijan’s continued contribution to global multilateralism through its successful chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, hosting of COP29 and the World Urban Forum, as well as its current chairmanship of CICA was reaffirmed.

Today, at the UN Security Council Open Debate on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System,” reiterated Azerbaijan’s principled position that lasting peace and security can only be achieved through full respect for the UN Charter and international law.   Emphasized that the principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs must remain the foundation of international relations, without selectivity or double standards.   Also underscored the necessity of comprehensive UN reforms, including making the Security Council more representative, accountable and responsive to current geopolitical realities.   Having itself suffered from violations of international law and the prolonged consequences of conflict, Azerbaijan understands the importance of justice, accountability and effective multilateral cooperation. Today, Azerbaijan continues to actively contribute to regional stability and peacebuilding through practical initiatives and international engagement. Azerbaijan remains committed to strengthening genuine multilateralism and promoting constructive cooperation through international platforms.
