@peabodypress @DpStevens1 @AstonishingFMan At one time, blacks did not have full legal rights as citizens and many considered it a violation of both the property rights of slave owners at the rights of the states to abolish slavery. Blacks still had God given rights, but they had not been recognized by government.
@peabodypress @DpStevens1 @AstonishingFMan Right now people at large, are uneducated on the issue. That's why a poll will show that 60% want Roe upheld, but the same poll, shows 56% want abortions banned after 15 weeks. Roe doesn't allow bans at 15 weeks.
@peabodypress @mericanrefugee @DpStevens1 The existence of constitutional rights is not determined by public opinion polls, nor should it be. Having said that, a large plurality is in the “mushy middle” that wants abortion legal but with restrictions. However, there’s substantial variation between different states.
@AstonishingFMan @peabodypress @DpStevens1 You are right, but the public opinion battle is extremely important, because it affects who office holders are and what they will do. It also affects whether an additional right can be recognized by the constitution via amendment..
@AstonishingFMan @peabodypress @DpStevens1 Constititional amendments generally require a sustained super majority to pass. The numbers do not exist to pass a prolife or pro-abortion amendment. That could be different in 20 years.
