🚂🇲🇾 Has KTMB killed off the Jungle Train? One of the highlights of this train was the approach to Gua Musang. Early morning mist. Limestone cliffs. Unfortunately, after a timetable change on 1st August, the train will now arrive there three and a half hours earlier at 4:01 a.m.
🚉🇹🇭 Inside Thailand’s New Beyond Horizon Luxury Rail Carriage
Thailand has officially unveiled Beyond Horizon, the country’s first prototype luxury passenger rail carriage designed and built by Thai engineers.
The striking red-and-white coach is more than simply a new railway vehicle. It represents two years of research aimed at establishing a domestic passenger rolling stock industry, reducing Thailand’s reliance on imported railway technology and demonstrating that Thai universities and industry can work together to produce modern passenger coaches.
A Project Years in the Making
Beyond Horizon was developed by the Faculty of Engineering at KMITL under the government’s “Thai First” policy, with funding from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and support from private industry.
The prototype has already completed more than 10,000 kilometres of testing on the national railway network. Around 44.1% of the project’s value comes from locally sourced components, while approximately 76% of the individual parts used in the carriage are manufactured in Thailand.
The project has also generated seven patents and industrial design registrations while helping develop a supply chain involving more than ten Thai companies.
Designed for Premium Rail Travel
Unlike a conventional first-class carriage, Beyond Horizon has been designed specifically for the premium tourism market, with just 25 seats spread across two distinct accommodation styles.
The coach is divided into two halves, separated by a central service area containing two toilets, one standard and one fully accessible.
One end of the carriage features 17 Luxury Class seats arranged in a 2+1 layout. These seats are always aligned to face the direction of travel, giving passengers a familiar railway experience. This section also includes overhead luggage racks, making it the more practical choice for travellers carrying larger bags.
The other half is home to the eight Super Luxury seats, arranged in a spacious 1+1 configuration. Here, the emphasis is on personal space rather than capacity. Unlike the standard section, the seats are fixed in position rather than reversible, meaning half face forwards while the remainder face backwards depending on the direction of travel.
The result is two quite different travel experiences within the same carriage, one offering generous comfort in a familiar railway layout, the other prioritising space and exclusivity.
What Happens Next?
Although Beyond Horizon has now been officially handed over to the State Railway of Thailand, it is not expected to enter regular passenger service.
Speaking during the launch, SRT Governor Veeris Ammarapala told me that, as only a single prototype currently exists, the carriage will instead be used on chartered services attached to tourist trains. That makes far more practical sense than attempting to operate a scheduled service with just one coach.
It also means rail enthusiasts and visitors are likely to see Beyond Horizon appearing on special excursions rather than everyday trains, in much the same way as the SRT’s successful Prestige and Royal Blossom luxury coaches.
Looking to the Future
Beyond Horizon is, above all, a proof of concept. Thailand is expected to require more than 2,400 new passenger coaches over the next 20 years, and the long-term ambition is to demonstrate that at least some of those vehicles could one day be designed and built domestically.
Whether this prototype eventually leads to a production fleet remains to be seen. For now, Beyond Horizon stands as an impressive showcase of Thai engineering - a luxury rail carriage that not only offers a glimpse of a possible future for premium rail tourism, but also signals Thailand’s ambition to become a serious player in passenger rail manufacturing.
