And this appears on my timeline to prove my point: one side's failure to comply with IHL does not absolve the other party to the conflict of their responsibility to ensure the safety of non-combatants.
Their argument is "we did this and that beforehand" while neglecting to mention that their actions resulted in multiple civilian casualties - again.
Practically every defense of killing non-combatants sounds the same, usually based on the mistaken assumption that military objectives triumph over non-combatant immunities. They seem to think IHL is negated by violations on the other side, thus making killing civilians lawful.

I have serious doubts the worst outcome for America was narrowly avoided today. It may actually mark the beginning of it.
It was an Iranian attack, response, and test all in one. I'd argue it was mostly a limited swarm test of the Iron Dome's capabilities. Any possible future air attack by Iran would likely be a bigger one calibrated by this, but with far less emphasis on test and more on attack.

If you're going to reference both Article 48 and 51 after you've granted an attack could have been excessive, then maybe it's time make sure your analyses isn't in conflict with those very Articles.
From the very beginning, it gets things wrong. IHL provides no justification for "the loss of civilians, even if high". That "even if high" is important, as extensive civilian deaths are never justified under IHL.
I was reading this thread, and I noticed a vanishing act that should not be: The author seems to implicitly strip away civilian protections after each rudimental analysis. IHL civilian protections do not magically evaporate after target selection, making attacks perfectly legal.

When I first saw this I thought it behaved more consistently with a Tamir missile, which now seems the case. You'll notice it turns in flight and explodes, forming a debris cloud - exactly what Tamir missiles do.
Another video from Al Jazeera appears to show the same failed rocket.
