💫 As the @ATCMeeting (ATC) 2026 approaches, I am reflecting on the #WorldTransplantCongress2025 – including our session on ‘Ancestry-Specific Variation in the #ApolipoproteinL1 Gene (#APOL1) and #KidneyTransplant Outcomes’. 🎤 It was a privilege to join colleagues from across the transplant community to discuss the rapidly evolving science of APOL1 genetics and its implications for kidney transplantation. My presentation, ‘Exploring Solutions to Ethical Challenges of APOL1 Testing,’ was part of a broader conversation about how advances in genomics can inform donor evaluation, patient counseling, and clinical decision-making. 🤝🏽 The field continues to move forward, and we are excited to share new work at ATC 2026: 🌟 ‘Outcomes After #LivingKidneyDonation by Race and APOL1 Genotype: Results from the #LivingDonorExtendedTimeOutcomes (#LETO) Study’ 🌟’Impact of Donor APOL1 Genotype on 15-Year Living Donor Kidney Transplant Graft and Patient Outcomes: Results from the Living Donor Extended Time (LETO) Study' (plenary) 🧬 We look forward to sharing progress in understanding the long-term impact of donor genetics on transplant outcomes. 📣 📖 Proud to share our latest publication in Frontiers-Medicine #Nephrology: 🧬’ #ApolipoproteinL1 (#APOL1) genetic testing, family history of hypertension, and kidney disease in a Midwestern U.S. cohort’ This study examined the intersection of #APOL1genetic risk, family history, and kidney health among Black adults participating in the #StLouisAPOL1 cohort study. 🔹 Among 220 participants who underwent APOL1 genotyping, we found that APOL1 high-risk genotypes were more common among individuals with a family history of hypertension and/or kidney disease, greater antihypertensive medication burden, lower kidney function, albuminuria, and early decline in eGFR. 🔹 Importantly, the findings highlight that genetic risk and family history provide overlapping—but not identical—information about kidney disease susceptibility. Together, these observations reinforce the need for integrated approaches that combine genetics, clinical assessment, and family history to improve kidney disease risk stratification and early identification of individuals at increased risk. 🌟 What makes this publication especially meaningful is the extraordinary collaboration behind it. This work brought together investigators from SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Mid-America Transplant, UCSF Department of Medicine, Wake Forest University, and the multidisciplinary #StLouisAPOL1StudyCollaborators.
