I have listened to a number of stakeholders opinions over the past weeks about a “broken” Triple Crown. Among those interviewed: Journalist TV personalities Announcers Podcasters Handicappers Track Executives Trainers Jockeys I have not however come across any interviews with breeders or veterinarians. Variations of attrition are natural occurrences when our industry discusses the reasons why horses don’t make it to the races, but I don’t believe we can have meaningful conversation without hearing from those who breed and provide medical care for our horses. I am not lost on understanding that those could be very uncomfortable conversations, but they need to be had. I am one who believes in our traditions and likewise believes only a super-horse can meet the demands of winning a Triple Crown. But offering indolent responses as to why we should change it are both myopic and incomplete. I have heard the anecdotal reasoning why “our horses today are not built like the were 20-30 years ago”, and the numerous comparisons between racing and the most recent rule changes the NFL and MLB have made to their games. Racing is without an analogous comparison. The NFL’s success is predicated on hope (draft and free agency) and urgency via a 17-game schedule. The changes they have made largely been made for safety concerns. The MLB needed to find ways to inject urgency into a 182 game schedule. A pitch count to give games rhythm and other rules were to help move games at a faster clip and to induce higher run production. I have a difficult time subscribing to the fact that a larger number of contemporary horses would be unable to successfully navigate a five-week triple crown. If I am off-base with my beliefs, then I want to hear from breeders and veterinarians as to why.

The issue is not the estimated 17,000 foals born-it is the fact that nearly half never race. And the cause of this is painfully obvious.

Incorrect. What’s broken is that 50% of our current foal crops never make the races. The moment we are in began when we started to breed less durable horses. Full stop. This debate is the effect not the root cause of our current position. Sometime about +|- 25-30 years ago commercial breeders collectively decided that breeding horses with the requisite constitution, stamina, and soundness to run three Group 1 races over a five week period was less profitable than breeding to compete in the triple crown races. Your suggestion cosmetically cures the symptoms.
