My mum, who was a thin beautiful 21 year old woman travelling alone who spoke near fluent French, insisting that the French aren't rude to foreign people and she doesn't understand how they got that reputation.

It does also help that we're Irish, I've never had a bad experience myself, I love France, but they're not as warm and open as I'm used to at home. More direct for sure, I can see how it could feel rude. And also they definitely are rude on purpose if they don't like you lol.
@Anaemic_Royalty the gendarmerie pulled my family over and charged us €120 euros for """""speeding""""" just because we had a british numberplate on our car. didnt even check the driver's license or anything "we dont like brits" tax :)
@Anaemic_Royalty i'm ethnically east asian. went to france as a teen and got "ni hao" or "chinoise" yelled in my face a bunch of times by some french men. kinda scared to go back tbh
@Anaemic_Royalty a major reason tourists think we french are rude: they don’t understand french etiquette. it is extremely rude to enter a store/approach anyone & start speaking/asking questions w/o first making solid eye contact & greeting them “bonjour!” & they are simply reciprocating.
@Anaemic_Royalty The important thing is to not be English. First sentence I was taught to say as a wee boy was an apology for my poor French and that I was Scottish. Worked a charm every time.
