there's a trap here in that modernity's easy dopamine (media, being online, junk food, etc) makes it easy to turn one's suffering *into* ordinary suffering you get to constantly benumb yourself, keeping you perpetually stuck in region alpha, never permitting your suffering to be salient enough to enter region beta & mobilize yourself to change things and so you linger in forever stuckness
If a place is 10 minutes away, you walk. If it’s 20 minutes away, you drive and arrive in 5. Likewise if your suffering is ordinary, you'll endure a life of quiet desperation. But if it's extraordinary, you might be forced to discover that the rays of Heaven shine even unto Hell.
Where is the collective outrage for the millions trapped in legislated poverty? Systemic rules actively punish disabled people for saving money or falling in love while forcing them to survive on pennies. Why must the disabled community always fight this exhausting battle alone?

I realize this is bait, but I think it’s worth noting how far downstream this idea is in 2026. The notion that art is supposed to advance is the theory of the avant-garde. But there hasn’t been an artistic avant-garde in over half a century. At this point it’s a hicklib fixation.
Bottom line is that when it comes to art and design the American right are hicks. They have either bad or retrograde taste in almost everything. Anything new or challenging or innovative or relevant to the zeitgeist terrifies them. It's the curse of low Big 5 openness.

I went to almost every single manager I ever had in tech, pointing to all of this research and telling them the way they were managing their offices and teams went against scientific best practices for efficiency, motivation,and productivity. All but ONE ignored it all.
@Oblivion_Folder Oh yeah, 100%. I had a meeting with some of the C suite about this before. The CEO told me to my face he didn't care if my team was more productive and finishing more tickets than any other team. HE didn't like seeing empty desks when he got to the office. That was the issue.
One thing I love is how basically every study says that students do better in school with less homework and later start times and workers do better with more vacation days and shorter shifts, but we do the exact opposite in this country because Puritanical feelings apparently beat facts.
I am still upset by the fact that the one and only motion picture adaptation of Upton Sinclair’s famous exposé novel “The Jungle” was made, is well regarded, and generally considered a lost film… EXCEPT THAT THERE’S A REVIEW OF IT ON IMDb FROM A DUDE WHO SAW IT IN 2017!!!
