Also from 1905. His father Ulysses was born a slave and my grandfather was actually dressed like this to go to school in Nebraska each day as an 8 year old, it was called the “Little Lord Fauntleroy” look. He got tired of getting pounded each day by the other kids and left home and ran off to Missouri and started his own business manufacturing tires. I still have those curls which he cut off himself prior to embarking on a new life. Also have the shirt. What looks like a cane in the photo is a crop, to keep slaves in line; to show that he is the master now. It was made from a bulls gerwhizzler. That, I do not have. I have a pair of his shoes and gloves, they were made from doeskin and are still quite soft. He never went to school beyond 3rd grade. Believe he was afraid if he enrolled in school his “secret” would be found out. No one asked about his parentage and he wasn’t telling. Guess he saw no sense in inviting trouble, so he denied his heritage…who he was, for an easier life. His name was Xenephon.
