Young people are increasingly finding community and purpose on the darkest corners of the internet. As my colleague @orensegal puts it, "Some people find their fun on TikTok or Instagram, and it's pretty benign, but others are getting this dopamine hit from seeing the antisemitism and the violence." What this federal indictment outlines is far beyond protest. It alleges a coordinated campaign of threats, intimidation, harassment, vandalism, and violence targeting university leaders and their families, elected officials, businesses, law enforcement, and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.    The defendants allegedly targeted these individuals and institutions because of their perceived support for Israel and reportedly sought to force divestment through intimidation and fear. If true, this isn't activism. It's criminal activity.    Protest is protected. Terrorizing people is not.   No cause justifies threatening families, targeting Jewish institutions, glorifying violence, or attempting to terrorize people into submission. If these allegations are proven, those responsible should be held fully accountable.

Elyssa Schmier, regional director of Anti-Defamation League Michigan,  said the allegations “paint a disturbing picture of individuals who sought to use fear, harassment and threats of violence to advance their cause.” “The right to protest and lobby university officials does not extend to threats, property destruction, harassment, or efforts to terrorize individuals and communities,” said Schmier. “We commend federal, state and local law enforcement for their work investigating these allegations and protecting those who were targeted.”

With the school year ending, it's worth recognizing some real progress: In 2025, antisemitic incidents on college campuses dropped by 66%. That drop didn't happen by accident. Since the launch of our Campus Antisemitism Report Card, schools across the country have strengthened their policies and taken meaningful steps to address antisemitism. The lesson is clear: Progress can happen when schools step up and take action. But we still have a long way to go. NEW: ADL & Stop Hate in Schools are partnering to strengthen antisemitism incident tracking in K–12 schools. Through incident data sharing, the partnership will enhance ADL’s Audit and Stop Hate in Schools’ real-time school and district-level incident maps, improve visibility into underreported incidents and help identify trends affecting Jewish students in classrooms, hallways and other school settings. That progress is real, but so is this: the community is facing a serious and growing wave of hate, harassment and extremism. ADL has stood alongside the LGBTQ+ community for years, and that commitment remains as strong as ever. 🌈

Yesterday, on the one-year anniversary of the antisemitic firebombing attack in Boulder, the local SJP chapter chose to share a lengthy social media post glorifying the attack, lauding the terrorist for his actions, and calling for his release. While we and others around the country remembered and mourned Karen Diamond z''l, who died from her injuries, and honored the other victims who were badly burned, the local SJP chapter chose to condone the violent attack that claimed an innocent life and left others with devastating injuries. The content of the post is beyond reprehensible. It is so detached from basic facts, human decency and reality that it would be difficult to take seriously if its message were not so dangerous. This is unacceptable and simply horrific.
