@IrishTimes So 3-0 50/50s, 4-1 wrong calls, and 5-4 non-decisions went against Cork according to your analysis. On final free Cork had ball, Hegarty fouled outside a scoreable position & Cork were not given the play they would have had. Foul was rewarded. Not hard to see why Cork were upset?
@DonachODonnell If a man runs at you and is allowed an extra second or two with the ball in his hand, you have no way to tackle properly. Enforce 4 steps rigorously, incentivise playing the ball, and disincentivise running into each other.
@DonachODonnell 100%. The game flowed far better always when 4 steps meant 4 steps, the ball spent way less time in hand, and you tackled when the ball was in play by shoulder, flick, hook or block. Allowing players time with ball in hand is the killer
@twiceasnice97 @adrianoregan @JohnDugganSport No! They talk about the odd example of 10/14 steps. The problem is the constant 5/6/7 steps, giving every player the chance to take their time on the ball. Without that time, you need to drive it more often than not.
@JohnDugganSport John, it all boils down to being allowed to over-carry the ball. It is the single biggest root cause of all of the above. Enforcing this rule would transform the game. Please raise it as a topic for discussion!
@SmallerFishGAA Do you think strict strict enforcement of the 4-step rule would improve the hurling? I believe it would transform the game in loads of ways and it’s a debate that is never had. Would love to hear you tease it out. The probable impacts:
No rule change needed. Just enforce the rules that are there 4 step rule if applied would have ball in play far more Tackle is an attempt on the ball when in play Reduce time with ball in hand and stop grabbing/slapping as a form of tackling = better game. The rules are there
Would you like to see rule changes to improve the entertainment value of hurling? (If yes, comment on what you’d like to see and why)
Symptomatic of the way our game is ref’d at the moment. Is that 9 steps🤔?? Who cares 😂@GAA_2022_TG4
We all know the game has changed players are better, fitter than before. But those players were playing a far more difficult game, & a more exciting and unpredictable game than now. And the simple reason is that we stopped enforcing a rule that is still there in black and white
… 5. Scoring becoming more difficult. More players being marked man on man along with less time on ball results in less players being found 60-80 yards from goal in space to bang it over the bar. This results in… 6. More unpredictability, more skill, more chaos, more fun.

@Ontheinside8 @SmallerFishGAA Agreed. Hurling needs the 4-step rule enforced. It will make it far more difficult to hold possession if players cannot run 6/7/8/12 steps with ball in hand scanning their options. Art of defending is gone, as you cannot tackle a man running with ball in hand other than to foul.
@SmallerFishGAA Hurling is getting worse and only purists can see it. No such thing as marking or positions anymore. Take HOTY, doesn’t hook, block, win puckouts and rarely even tackles but is just deadly accurate from 90 yards. And he’s a wing back, a corner forward does the most defending now.
@offtheball @ShaneHannon01 @GilletteUK Surely we don’t want to see the same substitution process like they have in soccer? You could boil the kettle and make tea before it’s complete, strolling off checking shin guards and then a high five a hug and a kiss with the guy replacing him 🤷🏻♂️leave well enough alone
@SmallerFishGAA Fair enough & maybe so, still their mistake & rules are clear. Having an extra man on the goal line facing a last ditch shot in an all Ireland final is not a thing of nothing. Tough on everyone, but objection is very valid, and not easy to walk away from the chance to win an AI.
