EXACTLY By making sonic struggle to be himself you’re missing the entire point of his character. That being he is effortlessly himself ALL THE TIME. That’s why he works so well as a catalyst for change and growth in others. If you remove that you weaken his impact.

yall the japanese translation of shadow 2005's story unironically made me not only understand but genuinely like a majority of shadow 05. It's got so many cool ideas and moments in the story and the core themes perfectly tie into the series like a neat little bow.

Sonic from Archie is a different charactee, even after the reboot. Game Sonic should not have the same expectations as him
It's not like Sonic can't develop or be explored while being in character either. Adventure 2, Secret Rings and Black Knight are great character studies!
The more modern need of having relatable characters and refusing the ones that are closer to "legendary" figures that you're supposed to admire is something that bugs me a lot The need for every protagonist to be a fragile underdog is something I'll never understand
The entire point behind the Werehog is that Sonic is still the same deep down despite his new look caused by Dark Gaia's energy. Even Darkspine, which is Sonic empowered by negative feelings is still Sonic, even if he expresses himeelf a little bit different

@3Caramelg122 I hated Chris as a kid. But as an adult, I more understood his struggles and actually kinda liked the growth he had towards the end of the show. And I only watched the English dub

@_BiNGOHiGHWAY_ @miijiu Not many people know about Sonic's Japanese origin story. It's very weird and meta and isn't required reading, but it gets the idea across that Sonic is supposed to be a mystical figure.
@bakusatsuou_24 @3Caramelg122 There was literally nothing annoying about him. He’s an absolute sweetheart. There is no such thing as a waste of space. Decomposite characters are valid and adaptations are allowed to change things. He did it just as good if not better than Amy anyway.
I care more about the artistic integrity of the series and the intentions of the people behind it than I do about how well the brand lines the pockets of corporate suits that don't care about it or us.
