ALERT: Former USPS worker pleaded guilty to stealing $34 million in mailed checks while on her route. Destinee Ruffin, 29, a former United States Postal Service (USPS) employee, pleaded guilty to stealing and depositing mailed checks. Ruffin took the stolen checks and sold them to co-conspirators, who then deposited them or created counterfeit checks and sold them online. Federal investigators caught Ruffin by tracing stolen Treasury checks with recorded serial numbers to her Indianapolis route. Federal agents searched Ruffin’s house and found over 6,000 pieces of mail totaling almost $20 million in unsold checks, and believe she sold almost $12 million in checks to co-conspirator John Young. The United States Attorney’s Office says that it estimates almost 6,500 victims were affected by this widespread fraud scheme.
