The Ministry of Health has officially commenced preparations for the Presidential National Health Summit 2026 following the inaugural meeting of the National Planning Committee chaired by Cabinet Secretary for Health Hon. Aden Duale. The Summit will serve as a landmark national platform bringing together leaders and stakeholders from across the health sector to review Kenya’s health reform journey, showcase achievements, address emerging challenges and define the next phase of reforms towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The forum will highlight the significant progress made under the leadership of H.E. President William Ruto and the Fifth Administration, including reforms in health financing, primary healthcare, digital health, legislation, governance and regulation. It will also provide an opportunity to build national consensus on priority actions required to strengthen the health system and improve health outcomes for all Kenyans. Opening the inaugural Planning Committee meeting, Hon. Duale described the Summit as a defining moment for Kenya’s health sector, calling on all planning committees and participating institutions to deliver a Summit that reflects measurable achievements, evidence-based reforms and practical recommendations for the future. He emphasized the importance of innovation, accountability and effective coordination in presenting one coherent national story of Kenya’s health transformation. The Cabinet Secretary further acknowledged the continued support of Kenya’s development and implementing partners, noting that strong collaboration across Government institutions, agencies and partners remains essential in advancing sustainable health sector reforms and achieving Universal Health Coverage. The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Ms. Mary Muthoni, Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, senior Ministry officials, Heads of Directorates, Divisions and Units, technical and administrative teams, as well as Chief Executive Officers of State Corporations, regulatory authorities and other health sector agencies.

Today, The Kenya Government launched the first edition of “Kenya Health Products and Technologies Local Manufacturing Strategy 2026-2030”. Keprecon representatives were among the stakeholders who joined the Government to witness the historic launch of the Kenya Health Products and Technologies (HPT) Local Manufacturing Strategy. The launch of the HPT Local Manufacturing Strategy was hailed as a major step toward strengthening Kenya’s health security and local production capacity. The launch is supportive of key outcomes under the ALIGN Consortium work on health innovation introduction, especially the Whole-of-Government Coordination and Whole of Market engagement pillars, which seek to promote collaboration across government and whole of market players to strengthen regulation, financing, procurement, and implementation. The @MOH_Kenya launched the Kenya Health Products and Technologies (HPTs) Local Manufacturing Strategy 2026–2030, a five-year roadmap aimed at boosting local production of health products, improving health security, creating jobs, and increasing access to essential health commodities. The Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. @fnoluga, who presided over the launch, said local manufacturing is central to building a strong and resilient health system. He noted that it will reduce over-reliance on imports, improve access to affordable medicines and technologies, and strengthen Kenya’s preparedness against global supply chain disruptions. He further emphasized the importance of turning research and innovation from institutions such as KEMRI and KEPHIS into locally produced health solutions that directly respond to Kenya’s needs. He also called for stronger coordination in procurement and demand planning to support local manufacturers and ensure a stable and predictable market for health products. The Director of Health Products and Technologies, Dr. Nazila Ganatra, explained that Kenya still depends heavily on imports for medicines, vaccines, and medical devices. She emphasized that this creates risks during global disruptions and makes local manufacturing a national priority. The strategy aims to strengthen local production, support manufacturers, and reduce dependence on imports while improving access to quality health products. Partners and stakeholders present reaffirmed their commitment to support the rollout of the strategy through technical support, financing, and collaboration. They emphasized that strengthening local manufacturing is key to improving access to affordable health products, ensuring supply chain stability and building a more resilient health system. The launch marked a shared commitment to building a stronger, more self-reliant health system for Kenya, where essential health products are produced, accessed, and sustained locally.
