A lot of traders say they have a discipline problem. Maybe. But ask another question first: Does your strategy actually fit you? Your personality. Your risk tolerance. Your lifestyle. Your available time. You can't outperform who you are. Find an edge you can live with and be able to execute.
True or False: A profitable trade can reinforce bad trading behaviour.
The Trading Lesson I Paid For: Sometimes the worst thing that can happen after breaking your rules...is making money. Because now you've been rewarded for doing exactly what you shouldn't have done. Bad habits can be profitable. Until they're not.
Most traders think FOMO is about missing profits. I think it's about something deeper. We hate watching other people make money without us. That's when someone else's trade becomes our mistake.
Weekend Reflection: Think about your worst decision this week. Not your worst trade. Your worst decision. What were you feeling immediately before you made it? That answer may teach you more than the chart.
You can give 10 traders the same strategy and get 10 different results. Why? Different risk tolerance. Different patience. Different discipline. Different experience. Different emotional responses. The strategy matters. But the person executing it matters just as much.
Lesson from 50 years in the markets: The sooner you stop trying to trade like someone else, the sooner you can start becoming the trader you're capable of being. Learn from others. But eventually, you have to trade your own plan.
One idea: Independence is an important milestone in a trader's journey. Learn from everyone you can. But your goal should eventually be to trust your own research, your own plan, and your own decisions.
Trading doesn't reward certainty. It rewards preparation. You don't need to know what happens next. You need to know: When you'll enter. Where you're wrong. How much you'll risk. When you'll exit. What you'll do if conditions change. Prepare for uncertainty instead of trying to eliminate it.
Lesson from 50 years in the markets: The longer I've traded, the less impressed I am by complexity. A simple edge executed with discipline can be powerful. A brilliant strategy you can't follow is worthless.
One idea: You don't need to catch every move. You don't need to trade every day. You don't need to have an opinion on every market. You need to recognize when your edge is present. And have the patience to wait when it isn't.
The trading industry sells certainty. Predictions. Targets. Signals. Secret indicators. The market offers none. Trading begins to change when you stop demanding certainty and start managing probability. You don't need to know what happens next. You need to know what you'll do when it does.
Lesson from 50 years in the markets: The market is an expensive place to discover you have an ego problem. Learn to be wrong. Learn to take the loss. Learn to move on. Your account will thank you.
The edge is simple. Executing it consistently is not. After more than 50 years in the markets, I've learned that successful trading isn't about finding secret indicators or predicting every market move. It requires: • a proven edge • disciplined execution • sound risk management • emotional resilience The market teaches these lessons eventually. The Trader's Journey was written to help traders learn them sooner.
