Best wishes to everyone on World Environment Day. I would like to applaud all those passionate about environmental conservation. This is a day to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our environment and furthering growth that is sustainable. Numerous efforts by our Government over the last decade highlight our work in this direction. Some of India’s key successes include expanding green cover and a rise in the population of several animals. The people of India have shown how collective efforts, policies, belief in science and innovation can improve our environment.
#UniteAgainstTerror: FG RALLIES CITIZENS, MEDIA, SECURITY AGENCIES IN UNITED FRONT AGAINST TERRORISM The Federal Government has called on all Nigerians, the media, civil society organisations, and security agencies to strengthen collaboration in the fight against terrorism and other forms of violent extremism threatening national peace and security. Speaking at a National Press Briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said defeating terrorism requires a united national response that transcends political, ethnic, religious, and regional differences. “The Federal Government is rallying citizens, the media, and security agencies in a united front against terrorism because an attack against one Nigerian is an attack against all Nigerians. Terrorism has no tribe, no religion, and no political affiliation. Its only purpose is destruction," said Idris, noting that this is the basis for the national call to action, #UniteAgainstTerror, which urges all Nigerians to stand together against violent extremism and criminality. The Minister assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains fully committed to securing the safe return of all abducted schoolchildren and teachers recently taken captive in separate attacks in Oyo and Borno States. “I wish to assure all Nigerians that the safe return of every child and every teacher currently in captivity remains a top national priority. The President has made it clear that no child belongs in captivity and that no effort will be spared in ensuring that those responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to justice.” He disclosed that security agencies, working under the direct instruction of the President, have intensified intelligence gathering, surveillance operations, and coordinated rescue efforts aimed at securing the release of the victims and bringing the perpetrators to justice. Highlighting recent security gains recorded across the country, the Minister noted that troops under Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East have continued to neutralise terrorists, rescue civilians, and destroy terrorist infrastructure. He added that over 50 terrorists were recently eliminated in follow-up operations in Borno State, while dozens of high-value targets have been taken out through coordinated military actions. He further stated that security operations across the North-West, North-Central, South-East, and South-South regions have led to the dismantling of criminal camps, disruption of kidnapping syndicates, and increased protection of critical national assets. According to the Minister, Nigeria's counter-terrorism efforts are increasingly yielding results because of improved inter-agency collaboration, intelligence sharing, enhanced surveillance capabilities, and stronger international partnerships. “What distinguishes our current approach is the combination of military pressure, intelligence-led operations, technology, regional cooperation, and community engagement. This comprehensive strategy is steadily degrading the operational capacity of terrorist and criminal groups,” he said. The Minister also pointed to major judicial breakthroughs in the fight against terrorism, including the recent convictions secured against perpetrators of the June 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, where scores of worshippers lost their lives. He noted that the Federal Government has also commenced one of the largest terrorism prosecution exercises in Nigeria's history, with hundreds of terrorism suspects currently undergoing trial under the country's counter-terrorism legal framework. “Justice is an essential pillar of national security. Beyond military operations, the government is ensuring that those involved in acts of terrorism face the full weight of the law. The ongoing terrorism trials and recent convictions send a clear message that impunity will not prevail,” the Minister said. The Minister also appealed to the media to exercise professionalism and restraint in reporting terrorism-related incidents, noting that terrorists often seek publicity and psychological impact through their actions. “While the media must continue to report accurately and responsibly, we must be careful not to inadvertently amplify the objectives of terrorists. Responsible journalism can help deny them the publicity they seek while keeping citizens properly informed,” he said. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, support security agencies with credible information, and reject narratives designed to divide communities along ethnic, religious, or political lines. The Minister reiterated that the Federal Government remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property and assured citizens that ongoing security operations would continue until terrorism and violent criminality are decisively defeated. “Nigeria has faced difficult moments before and emerged stronger. We shall overcome this challenge as well. United in purpose and unwavering in resolve, we will ensure that terrorism has no future in Nigeria,” he said. He expressed confidence that with the continued support of citizens and stakeholders, Nigeria would overcome the threat of terrorism and build a safer, more secure future for all. The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Dr. Binyerem C. Ukaire; the Inspector General Of Police, represented by Force PRO, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, mni, mnipr; Director, Defence Information, Gen. Samaila Uba; Special Adviser to the President, Media & Public Communications, Sunday Dare; Senior Special Assistant Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz; Senior Special Assistant to the President, Public Engagement, Mr Fredrick Nwabufo; Senior Special Assistant to the President Media and Special Duties, Tunde Rahman among other dignitaries. Rabiu Ibrahim, mnipr Special Assistant (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation. Thursday, 4 June 2026

SPEECH BY THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND NATIONAL ORIENTATION, MOHAMMED IDRIS, FNIPR, AT A SPECIAL BRIEFING ON NATIONAL SECURITY, #UNITEAGAINSTTERROR, HELD ON THURSDAY, 4TH JUNE, 2026, RADIO HOUSE, ABUJA. Protocol. This press briefing comes at a sobering moment in our nation's history. Recent events in Oyo and Borno States have once again tested our collective resolve as a people. The abduction of innocent school children and their teachers is not merely an attack on families or communities; it is an attack on the future of our nation, on education, and on the values that bind us together as Nigerians. On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Federal Government of Nigeria, I wish to assure all Nigerians that the safe return of every child and every teacher currently in captivity remains a top national priority. The President has made it clear that no child belongs in captivity and that no effort will be spared in ensuring that those responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to justice. He has directed that every lawful instrument available to the Nigerian state be deployed towards achieving this objective, including the deployment of a specialised rescue team. He has also authorised the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to strengthen security presence across vulnerable communities and forests within the state. In Borno State, terrorists also attacked a school in Askira-Uba Local Government Area, with at least 42 children reported missing following the assault. This attack bears the familiar signature of terrorist groups that have for years sought to undermine education and destabilise communities in the North-East. While operational details cannot be disclosed for security reasons, I can assure Nigerians that multiple security and intelligence agencies are working in close coordination. The Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, the National Intelligence Agency, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the National Counter Terrorism Centre are actively involved in ongoing efforts. Intelligence gathering, aerial surveillance, community engagement, and search-and-rescue operations are continuing without interruption. What distinguishes the Tinubu Administration's response is not merely the deployment of force but the adoption of a comprehensive, intelligence-led approach to national security, combined with an ongoing and long-overdue overhaul of the nation’s security architecture. One of the pillars of this overhaul is the determined implementation of state policing. President Tinubu is determined to ensure that one of his legacies is the delivery of a restructured policing system that is dynamic, flexible, and fit-for-purpose – one that truly empowers and secures local communities. President Tinubu assumed office amid evolving security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, and other criminal activities. Rather than relying solely on military action, this administration has pursued a strategy that combines military pressure, intelligence coordination, technological enhancement, regional cooperation, and socio-economic interventions. Since May 2023, Nigeria has recorded significant successes against terrorist and criminal networks. Hundreds of terrorists and criminal elements have been neutralised, arrested, or forced to surrender. Numerous victims of kidnapping have been rescued across various parts of the country. These successes are being replicated across various theatres of operation. In the North-East, troops of Operation Hadin Kai continue to record significant gains against Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists. In the past week alone, the Nigerian Army and Air Force, acting on credible intelligence, successfully repelled multiple infiltration attempts along the Kirawa-Pulka and Ngoshe axes in Borno State. Follow-up operations led to the neutralisation of over 50 terrorists, including several high-value targets. According to the Theatre Commander, approximately 1,000 terrorist elements, including dozens of their leaders, were eliminated during the first quarter of 2026 alone as troops sustained both offensive and defensive operations across the theatre. A major breakthrough was recorded in mid-May through a joint Nigeria-United States-supported operation that disrupted terrorist logistics networks and eliminated key ISWAP commanders. Security forces additionally rescued 92 civilians from terrorist captivity near Buratai, while enhanced security deployments ensured that Eid-el-Kabir celebrations proceeded peacefully across key areas of the North-East. In the North-West and North-Central regions, joint military and police operations have intensified pressure on bandit groups and kidnapping syndicates operating in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kogi, Niger, Kwara, Kaduna and adjoining states. Several criminal camps have been dismantled, numerous suspects arrested, and intelligence-led operations have continued to deny criminal elements freedom of movement. In the South-East and South-South, security forces continue to sustain operations against violent criminal networks, separatist-linked violence, cult groups, oil thieves, and economic saboteurs. Enhanced maritime security operations led by the Nigerian Navy have contributed to a reduction in oil theft, resulting in an increase of about 400,000 barrels per day of production since the President assumed office. These efforts are also yielding tangible results within the justice system. Just yesterday, the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted and sentenced four terrorists to death for their involvement in the horrific attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, in June 2022, one of the most tragic terrorist incidents in our nation's recent history. The judgment demonstrates that terrorism is being confronted not only on the battlefield but also through the rule of law. It sends a clear message that those who commit acts of terror against Nigerians will be pursued, prosecuted, and punished in accordance with the law. Additionally, in April 2026, Nigeria commenced one of the largest terrorism prosecutions in its history, with more than 500 suspects facing trial for alleged involvement in terrorist activities and support for militant groups. The outcomes have already been substantial. According to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, 508 terrorism-related cases were brought before the courts during the latest phase of the trials, resulting in 386 convictions. These convictions are a significant milestone in Nigeria's counter-terrorism efforts. While no judicial outcome can erase the pain suffered by those affected, it reinforces public confidence that terrorism will not go unanswered. President Tinubu also recognises that terrorism has evolved into a transnational challenge requiring international cooperation. Consequently, Nigeria has expanded strategic security partnerships with friendly nations and international organisations. The relationship between Nigeria and the United States has grown significantly stronger under this administration, particularly in intelligence sharing, counterterrorism cooperation, military training, border security, cybersecurity, and capacity building for security personnel. Beyond the United States, Nigeria continues to strengthen cooperation with countries across Africa, Europe, and the wider international community. Through regional frameworks and multinational security arrangements, our country is collaborating with neighbouring states to prevent terrorist groups from exploiting our borders. Equally important is the strong collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments. In the case of the Oyo abductions, President Tinubu has maintained close coordination with Governor Seyi Makinde and state security authorities. Both levels of government are sharing intelligence, coordinating rescue operations, and mobilising resources towards securing the release of the victims. Governor Makinde himself has publicly affirmed that the Federal Government and Oyo State Government are working together around the clock to ensure the successful rescue of the abducted children and teachers. This spirit of cooperation extends to Borno State, where federal security agencies continue to work with the state government and local authorities in addressing the security challenges facing communities affected by terrorism. There is a fundamental point to be made: that the enduring solution to Nigeria's security challenges lies in shared and inclusive economic growth and shared prosperity. This is why President Tinubu is championing the most ambitious, forward-looking, and productive economic reforms in our nation's history, combined with an infrastructure programme that is delivering thousands of kilometres of new concrete highways criss-crossing the country, alongside mass housing, gas and power supply, state-of-the-art federal medical facilities, and much more. By opening up thousands of communities through new roads and rail, we are setting tens of millions of our people on the path to a new wave of prosperity. This is what the Renewed Hope Agenda is all about — boundless opportunities for hardworking Nigerians to succeed at what they do, whether as farmers, entrepreneurs, artisans, traders, academic workers, students, or white-collar workers. This critical nexus between the economy and security is one the President is keenly aware of, and is determined to act upon for the benefit of all Nigerians, now and for generations to come. As I conclude, let me reiterate that the fight against insecurity cannot be won by any single institution acting alone. It requires partnership, trust, and a common purpose. Government action alone is not enough. Terrorists thrive on fear, division, misinformation, and public despair. Their objective is not only to kidnap or kill; it is to weaken national unity and undermine confidence in our institutions. We must not allow them to succeed. In this regard, the media also has an important responsibility. While it is essential to report accurately and hold institutions accountable, we must be careful not to inadvertently amplify the objectives of terrorists by giving undue prominence to their atrocities. Terrorist groups seek publicity, fear, and psychological impact far beyond the immediate scene of their crimes. Responsible reporting, guided by professionalism and national interest, can help deny them this objective. We therefore urge media organisations to exercise restraint, verify information before publication, and avoid sensationalism. At the same time, citizens must work closely with the government and security agencies by sharing credible information and reporting suspicious activities. Defeating terrorism requires a whole-of-society approach. Nigeria must remain secure and united, because only in an atmosphere of peace and stability can our democracy, economy, media, and national aspirations continue to flourish. This is why the theme of today's briefing, "Unite Against Terror," is so important. Whether in Oyo, Borno, Zamfara, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, the South-East, or any other part of Nigeria, an attack against one Nigerian is an attack against all Nigerians. Terrorism has no tribe. Terrorism has no religion. Terrorism has no political affiliation. Its only purpose is destruction. As citizens, we must therefore reject divisive narratives, support our security agencies by providing credible information, and remain vigilant in our communities. We must continue to promote national unity and strengthen the bonds that connect us as one people under one nation. To the families whose children and loved ones remain in captivity, I convey the assurances of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Your pain is our pain. Your government – our government – has not forgotten you. Every available resource is being deployed. Every security agency remains engaged. Every intelligence lead is being pursued. Nigeria has faced difficult moments before and emerged stronger. We shall overcome this challenge as well. We shall defeat terrorism. We shall protect our schools. We shall safeguard our children. And we shall continue to build a nation where every Nigerian can live, learn, work, and prosper in peace. Together, united in purpose and unwavering in resolve, we will ensure that terrorism has no future in Nigeria. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Thank you.
Starlink V3 satellites have >10X bandwidth of V2 and there’ll be >10X launched, which means >100X more bandwidth. Also, altitude will be 350km vs 550km, so min latency can be cut in half. Light travels 300km/ms in space, so physics round trip min latency drops to <5ms.
India’s digital infrastructure journey is gathering remarkable momentum. AirTrunk has announced plans to invest around Rs. 3 lakh crore ($30 billion) in India, and develop 5 GW of data centre capacity. This is among the largest proposed investments in the country’s digital infrastructure ecosystem. Such investments will strengthen India’s position as a global hub for cloud computing and AI, while generating employment opportunities, supporting local supply chains and accelerating innovation-led growth. It is clear that the future of the world’s digital economy is increasingly being shaped in India!

Many Nigerians say they are not yet feeling the impact of the economic reforms. That concern is understandable. But economic progress can be compared to building a house. As the owner, you can see the foundation being laid, the walls going up, and the resources being invested. The project is clearly advancing, even though you cannot move in yet because it is still under construction. It would be inaccurate to claim that no progress is being made simply because the house is not yet ready for occupation. The true benefits come when the construction is completed. In the same way, structural reforms often take time before their effects are fully felt by ordinary citizens. The challenge is to ensure that the rebuilding continues until the benefits translate into better living conditions for the people.
As President, I would read 10 letters a day sent to me by ordinary Americans. At the Obama Presidential Center, we’ll have some of the letters I read — and responded to — every night. I still get emotional reading them, and it’s one of my favorite exhibits.
PRESS STATEMENT ỌBAFẸMI AWOLỌWỌ FUTURE LEADERS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME OPENS APPLICATIONS ACROSS AFRICA AND THE DIASPORA The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has announced the opening of applications for the Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Future Leaders Fellowship Programme, a highly selective, merit-based initiative inspired by the enduring legacy of Chief Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ, SAN, GCFR (1909–1987). The Fellowship, which reflects the Foundation's commitment to moving from celebrating history to shaping the future, is designed to nurture a new generation of ethical, visionary and impact-driven leaders across Africa, the Caribbean and the global diaspora. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Foundation said the Fellowship is open to young people aged 20–35 and seeks to equip participants with the values, discipline, knowledge and leadership skills required to make meaningful contributions to society. The Foundation recalled that the initiative was first announced at the 2026 Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ Memorial Lecture on March 6 and noted that the Fellowship was inspired by Chief Awolowo's enduring commitment to principled governance, social justice and human development through education. According to the Foundation, young people across Africa today face economic uncertainty and deep social inequalities, yet remain extraordinarily talented, innovative and globally connected. What many require is structured support, mentorship and a values-based leadership framework capable of translating potential into transformational impact. The Foundation explained that the Fellowship was conceived to bridge that gap by connecting Awolowo's leadership ideals with the contemporary realities of governance, public service, entrepreneurship and social development. "The programme aims to build a vibrant pan-African network of future leaders who embody integrity, excellence and service, while fostering an alumni community that will continue to grow in influence and impact," the statement said. Participants will engage in leadership development, personal effectiveness training, mentorship, collaborative learning and practical problem-solving focused on real societal challenges. The inaugural Fellowship will run for eight weeks beginning on October 4, 2026, with virtual sessions held every Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (Nigeria Time, WAT – UTC+1). The Foundation stressed that admission into the Fellowship is strictly merit-based and that applicants will be required to submit a personal statement and provide two referees. Interested persons are invited to submit their applications via: obafemiawolowofoundation.com/future-leaders… For further information, applicants may contact the Programme Coordinator via email: [email protected] [email protected] Applications close on August 31, 2026.
FG to Expand Deep Blue Project to Bakassi, Other Vulnerable Maritime Corridors — Oyetola · As NIMASA Graduates 492 Advanced Combat Personnel for Deep Blue Project The Federal Government has announced plans to expand the Deep Blue Project to vulnerable coastal and maritime corridors across the country, including the sensitive Bakassi axis, as part of efforts to further strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security architecture. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this on Thursday during the 2026 Graduation Ceremony of 492 Advanced Combat Personnel and Capability Presentation of the Deep Blue Project Task Group held at the 5th Battalion Army Barracks in Elele, Rivers State. Dr. Oyetola said the planned expansion would target critical coastal areas such as Bakassi Peninsula, Igbokoda and other vulnerable maritime corridors across the country. According to him, the initiative is aimed at consolidating the gains already recorded under the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, popularly known as the Deep Blue Project. “Building on the significant strides already made, the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is currently evaluating strategic frameworks for the expansion of the Deep Blue Project to further strengthen our maritime security architecture in critical coastal areas such as Igbokoda, Bakassi, and other vulnerable maritime corridors,” the minister said. He explained that the move would further curtail maritime insecurity, enhance operational capacity, improve maintenance systems and ensure maritime security assets remain fully functional and effective in safeguarding Nigeria’s waters. The minister stated that Nigeria had recorded zero piracy incidents within its territorial waters over the past four years due to the sustained implementation of the Deep Blue Project and collaboration among security agencies. He also said that piracy incidents across the Gulf of Guinea had declined by more than 70 per cent within the same period.

Progress has also been made in roads, railways, the digital economy, and electricity reforms. While many Nigerians want immediate results, these were difficult but necessary decisions that previous administrations avoided. For taking those bold steps to reposition the economy, President Tinubu deserves credit. Dr Pascal Ebhohimhen, Former Director, Nigerian Deposits Insurance Corporation
