Patriotism derives from the ancient Greek πατρις, ("ancestor's land" or "clan lands"), in turn from πατρια (the extended family, clan, or other group of common ancestry), in turn from πατερ ("father"). The term πατρις referred to a set of people of recent common ancestry, in the Indo-European and Semitic cultures alike, symbolized by a common patriarch -- a group of relatives, and of the common bonds those relatives had.
Patriotism was not about watching TV and getting all gung-ho to go fight for some strangers against some other strangers. It was about fighting for *your family*.
You naturally had to join up with other families to win battles -- the Greeks united clans into a πόλιν, from where we get "polity" and "politics." Such cooperation required then and requires now a great deal of politics. Nevertheless, protecting one's own family was the core objective of every patriot.
Militarism is only patriotic when it pursues that goal. The more militarism departs from the goal of protecting your family and mine, the less patriotic it is. When militarism harms our families, whether via direct violence or through substantial indirect harm, moral or financial, militarism becomes unpatriotic, even treasonous.
President Trump and his Epstein-adjacent cabal, along with AIPAC congressmen, have harmed or endangered many American families, while helping few, by, to the neglect or our own national security and to the detriment of our own financial security, fighting for foreigners they love against other foreigners they hate. They have expended our hard-earned savings and put our military personnel and overall national security in danger in the process. They and their cheerleaders are far closer to being traitors than to being patriots.
This war will go down in history as one of America's greatest mistakes. This predictable disaster is what happens when objectivity is smeared, and militarism is celebrated as patriotic.
Barak is a cruel Israeli sociopath with a record of horrific violence and rape. Didn’t the leading U.S. “lefty” intellectual know that? Inexcusable, no matter how you frame it.
Chomsky was mid jestermaxxing with Ehud Barak. Does it make sense for a left critic of power to lime with an Israeli genocide gooner and get mogged by Davos moids escorted by teen foids on Epstein Island?
Ilia Malinin, the world’s top male figure skater, struggled in his Olympic debut, losing the short program to Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama. His slow start means the U.S. will have a fight to win the team gold. wapo.st/4rIbsAJ
There's a lot of truth to this. Wherever we have data, we see this repeated:
Communists tend to be downwardly mobile. They are, always and everywhere, disproportionately likely to be their generation's losers.
Consider this Finnish data on the Red and White Guards:
@JonathonInkin@EvaVlaar For some odd reason, some of the anti-immigrant parties decided it was a good idea to team up with the immigrants to Palestine who went on to displace the Palestinians and set up their own country. I agree with you this is quite puzzling:
